NORTH KOWAI SCHOOL COMMITTEE
A meeting of the North Kowai school committee was held in the schoolroom, Amberley, on Saturday evening, October 9. Present —Messrs Douglas, Orampton, MeNaught, Musgrave, and Williams (chairman). Beferring to the application for subsidising an assistant mistress for the main school, the chairman said that no letter had been received from the Board as yet. The Board had, however, he believed, agr od to give £24 per annum, that is to say a second year’s pupil teacher’s salary. Considering that the attendance for last month was 107, and for the previous quarter 103, and that an average of 105 entitles a school to two pupil teachers, the proposal of the Board, as reported in the papers, is not what the committee perhaps expected. Miss Freeman, the mistress at the side school, had resigned, and this had been duly notified to the Board. A long discussion took place on the question of contributing towards an assistant mistress, during which it was stated that there were only seven children under five years of age on the school books. Ultimately it was resolved to ask the Board to contribute such an amount as would enable the committee, by contributing say £25, to say such a salary as a teacher could lire on. She committee then adjourned.
