HOKITIKA, October 8. Charge of Wife Murder. David Hutchison was brought up this morning on remand at the R M. Court, before Dr. Giles, R.M., and Messrs Bonnar and Kemid, J.P.'s, charged with the murder of Margaret Hutchison, his wife, and his infant son. The evidence was very lengthy, and the inquiry was adjourned at 7 p.m. until 10 a.m. to-morrow. O AMARU, October 8. Assisting in I. licit DistillingYesterday Philip M'Carthy and Daniel M'Oarthy, his son, were arrested for having rendered assistance to Marlin Power, who bad an illicit still in his possession. They were brought up before the R.M. and remanded to Palmerston, whither they were taken this morning. Narrow Escape. Ounoinghom’s Hotel at Windsor had a narrow escape from fire on the night of the 2nd inst. The weather boards outside had been set on fire, it is thought by an incendiary. The matter has been placed in the hands of the police, but up to the present no arrests have been made. The insurances on the building, stock, furniture, &s. amounted in round numbers to £13 (1 0. DUNEDIN, Octobers. The Kyebnm TragedyThe trial of Ah L?e and Lee Guy for the murder of Mrs Young at Kjeburn, was continued at the Supreme Court to-day. The case for the Crown was concluded, and Mr McDermott spoke forcibly ai d eloquently for an hour and a half in defence. The Judge ruled against the admissibility of the statement of Ah Leo implicating Lee Guy, but said that he would admit it, and leave it for the full Court to decide whether he was right nr not. Under the circumstances the Crown Prosecutor declined to put in the statement as evidence. The Court adjourned till next day. October 9. Mr Howlatt addressed the Court on behalf of Ah Lee for a couple of hours. The Judge • immenced to sum op at noon, and is still speaking. Improving. The Stamp RevenueI hear that the revenue from stamps, although the returns are not quite complete, is found to oume very close to the proportional estimate for the half-year (£70,000), while, with the additions accruing through the operation of the new Stamp Act, it may be taken as pretty certain that the year’s results will fully come up to Major Atkinson’s calculation (£140,000), and probably will exceed that amount.
