The brig Emperor, Captain Cleary, arrived at Newcastle from Auckland September 26tb. _ The s s. Grafton, from Wellington, arrived yesterday at noon, and sailed in the evening lor Oamaru. The U.S S. Co ’s steamer Arawata arrived at 7.30 a m. yesterday from Port Chalmers, and proceeded hence yesterday in the afternoon for Auckland via way ports. . The barque Hierooymous (German), Captain Ipland, arrived from Port Chalmers yesterday, vnth 310 tons cf original cargo from New York, including a shipment of the Osborne reaper and binder. She was berthed at No. 4 wharf, and will proceed hence, after discharging, to Samoa, to load for Falmouth. Messrs Wood, Shand and Co. are her agents. The Union Steamship Company’s s a. Wanaka arrived yesterday from Wellington, Picton, and Ke'son, ased sailed South in the evening, taking a nnmher of new arrivals ex Crusader and the sugar ex Jasper, consigned to Dnnedin. TEE CRDSADEB. As before, the ship is in command of Captain Llewellyn Davies, a well-known master in Messrs Shaw, Savill and Co.’s line, who has with him the same staff of officers as when here last. Between eighty and ninety passengers arrived in the i rnsader. A portion of the number are going down to Dnnedin, and a good many meet with friends here who have preceded them in becoming colonists. The medical care of the ship was intrusted to Dr. Chilton, who will be remembered as having held the position of surgeon to the hospital here some time ago, and who has returned with the view of making his home in the colony. Like the captain and the other officers, he appears to have enjoyed the respect and confidence of the passengers, amongst whom during the voyage the exercise of bis medical skill was frequently rendered necessary. From his report the following notes are taken. On July 7th Mrs Phi’pot was confined prematurely of a son stillborn, brought on probably from sea sickness, ©n July 20;h four cases of measles were discovered, and on August 3rd, in spite of precautions, the -e v ere fourteen oases, all of a mild character. Tha ship was thoroughly disinfected and a quantity of bedding thrown overboard. On August 20th C. E. Ives, aged two years, died from acuta bronchitis. An accident occurred to a passenger who fell down with a pipe m his mouth, the stem being forced by the fall into his head, producing concussion of tho brain. Ha hud completely recovered before the ship’s arrival. On Tuesday evening last an old man named Talbot, who had been under medical treatment, attempted to commit suicide by cutting his throat while suffering from temporary insanity. He is not yet out of danger. Captain Davies’ report of the voyago ia condensed as follows : Cast off from the tng boat off Dover on July 3rd, and left the Start on the 7th ; sighted Ushant on the 9th, and crossed the Bay of Biscay with the sea remarkably smooth, scarcely a ripple on it. Light trades were met with, and the i< quatar crossed on Angust 11th, ia 30 W. On Augn'-t 26th, in 36 S. and 26 W., got the first blow; the voyage up to this time was so marked by fine weather that it conld have been safety made in open boada. That day carried away the mizzen top-gallant mast. On September Ist in 39" ; 8 S. long., 2 E., a gale from S. to S.E. was experienced, lasting until the 4th, and which carried tho ship considerably to the northward. Passed the Cape on September 6th, and on the 15th a terrific squall from the S.W. was experienced. It blew for about twelve hoars, final y ceasing as suddenly as it came on. The meridian of the Leuwin was crossed on September 24th, .Tasmania 29th, and the Snares October 3rd in a gale from the north. N. veering from N.E. to N.VV. winds were carrried up the coast. To-day the vessel will come in to a discharging berth. Yesterday she was entered in at the Customs by her agents, Messrs Edwards Bennett and Co. POET OF SUMNEE. . Aeeivbd —October 6.
