NORTH RAKAIA BOARD OF CONSERVATORS.
A meeting was held at the office, Southbridge, on Tuesday, the sth October, on the return of the members from an inspection of the river. There were present —Mr E. J. Lee (in the chair), Messrs R. Lockhead and D. Marshall. Correspondence was read—From the clerk to the Belwyn County Council, advising payment to the Board’s credit with the Union Bank of the sum of £IOOO, grant voted at their last meeting. From the Under Secretary for Public Works, in reply to the chairman’s letter forwarding Messrs Dobson and Son’s account in connection with the River Report, stating that the Government, after full consideration, cannot admit any liability for this expenditure. The draft of the chairman’s reply was read and endorsed by the Board. From the clerk to the Ellesmere Road Board re the appointment of collector for the rate just struck, and accepting the offer of a chain road on reserve 1244, but declining to fence the road off from the reserve. From the Registrar-General, applying for certain statistics and statements of revenue and expenditure for the year ending 31st March, 1879, also returns of the assets and liabilities of the Board. The Secretary stated that these had been furnished at once. From Mr H. H. Pitman, stating that the school commissioners had decided to let reserve 1185 to the Board for fourteen years, without any compulsory conditions or stipulation of any sort or kind. From the Minister for Public Works, inviting attention to certain sections in the Public Works Act, 1880. From Mr Marshman, that the grants of reserves 2054, 2381, and 2382 will be prepared as soon as the surreys of them have been perfected. From Mr Gorman, offering the Board a right of entry, with carts and material, for erecting protective works. The decision of the sub-committee appointed to deal with the reserves was approved, and the chairman was authorised to sign the leases when prepared. The suggestion of the chairman, that Mr Hurst bo consulted in reference to an exchange of the river frontage of reserve 1376 for a portion of the land included in the Board’s Crown grant, was overruled by the other members, and it was resolved that the matter be left in abeyance for the present. The secretary was instructed to call the Mention of the Colonial Treasurer to the Board’s subsidy on r-tea actually collected, and to request that the same may be for- ( warded as soon as possible. The secretary was directed to arrange for the construction of two small embankments on the reserve at present leased to Gorman, and to see that the works, as at present commenced close to Mr Miln’s, were carried out as far as practicable. The chairman was authorised to have the amount annually to be set aside for the sinking fund placed at a fixed deposit with the Bank at once.
The Board determined that as soon as practicable tenders for teams for gone carting, and for leasing the unoccupied reserves, be called.
The pay-sheet, amounting to £703 2s 6d, was examined and passed for payment.
