HOSPITAL AND CHARITABLE AID BOARD.
A meeting of the above was held Wednosday. Present —Mr H. Thomson (chairman), Messrs Montgomery and Hawkes, the Mayor of Sydenham and the Mayor of Christchurch. The report of the Hospital committee was road, stating that during the fortnight twentytwo patients had been admitted and twentytwo discharged, leaving forty-soven_ in the institution. During the same period two deaths occurred. The committee had accepted the tender of Mr Parker to rebuild the chimney and reset the boilers in the laundry. A letter was read from Dr. Irving, stating that the absence of some members of the staff had precluded him from getting an answer on the question of the provision for infectious diseases.
The Chairman said that he had communicated with the Government in re the holding of the Hospital enquiry, stating that he intended leaving for Melbourne about October stb, and asking either that the enquiry should be held prior to his leaving for Australia or after his return. To this the|Government had replied that Dr.Skae, who was to hold the enquiry, would bo in Ohr’stohuroh in about ten days. Ho had now asked the Government to postpone the enquiry till after his return.
A letter was read from the secretary of the Wesleyan Sabbath school, stating that they had presented the Hospital with about 100 volumes of books.
The secretary was instructed to acknowledge the same with thanks. A letter was read from the Colonial Secretary, stating that in future all correspondence in connection with the Lyttelton Orphanage should be addressed to the secretary of the Education Department, the charge of the institution having been transferred to that department. The report of the master of the Orphanage was read, reporting that there were now 100 children in the Orphanage, viz., 55 boys and 45 girls. The subject of better ventilation of the Orphanage was referred to the orphanage committee.
The Board then adjourned, after disposing of some charitable aid business.
