CRICKET.
OPENING OF THE SEASON—IBBO-81. Notwithstanding the heavy rain that had fallen during the previous day and night, tho ground on Saturday was in a very fair condition for play, and a good muster of members of the United C.C.O. put in an appearance to take part in the opening game of the club between sides chosen by ths vice-president and secretary. The vice-president's side was first to go in and remained at the wickets uotil nearly five o'clock, having scored 137, the ohief contributors being :—Ashby, 20; E. Gotterill, 28; Ross (not out), 22 ; Cox, 20. The bowling and fielding of the secretary's side were certainly not above opening day form. Secretan and Hartland went in first for the latter and remained at the wickets till time was called, the score standing at 51, chiefly contributed by Secretan, who played very well for the first day, his score of 36 (not out) was made up of three 4*s, one 3, six 2's and singles. Hartland, not out 13 Extras 2 Total 51 A match was played on the Ohristohureh cricket ground, Hagley Park, between the Sydenham and Sunnyside Cricket Clubs, on Saturday last. The Sunnyside team went in first and scored 102, and the Sydenham C.C. had made 84 with four wickets down when the stumps were drawn at 5.30 p.m. Dr. Hacon 36 and Mr Seager 10 for Sunnyside, and Messrs J. Gordon 33 and Chambers, not out, 24 for Sydenham, were the chief scorers. The members of the Press Club played an opening game on Saturday on their ground, in Hagley Park. There was a good muster of members and two elevens were picked, captained by Messrs Asquith and Edmonds, At the conclusion of the game a general meeting was held, at which the following officers and match committee were elected: —President, Mr C. E. Briggß; vice-presidents, Messrs E. 0. J. Stevens and J. Hebden ; secretary, Mr Buckland ; match committee, Messrs Ashbolt, Asquith, W. G. Atack, Board, and Grey. The match Avonville v Bohemians was played on the Linwood Estate on Saturday laßt, and resulted in favor of the former by 10 runs and two wicketß to fall. The following are the scores :—Bohemians, 65 ; Avonville, 75. The bowling of Hardie for the Bohemians could not be excelled, and Thompson for Avonville did good service. For the Bohemians Hardie 32 and Wenlook 16, were the highest scores, and Taylor 19 and T. Fletoher 12, were the highest for Avonville.
