MAGISTRATES' COURTS.
OHEISTOHUROH. Monday, Octobbb 4th. [Before G. L. Mellisb, Esq., B.M.] Deuhkbnnbss.—W. Jas. Hill, charged with this offence, now appeared ; being very drank he was Bent back to the lock-up to get sober. Arthur McMorron, W. H. Tuoker, Daniel Pasuhe, Wm. Chapman, Ellen Anderson, Isabella Leckie, and Mary Ann White, were fined 10s each ; and Geo. Howroyd, who had indecently exposed himself, was fined 10s. Epbious Dbiving.—Walter Pitoher, a cabman, was charged with furiously driving his vehicle, a two-horsed hackney carriage, in Colombo street, on the 25th September. Mr Holmes appeared for the defendant. Evidence was brought to show that defendant cantered or galloped his horses, apparently in order to pass and cross the tramcars. For the defence it was pleaded that the fast pace was rendered necessary to avoid n collision with an approaching jwater cart. His Worship said there might be some little excuse for defendant, and he would only be fined in the sum of 10s. Miscellaneous. —Michael Geoghegan, for allowing a horse to wander at large, was fined 5s and costs.; Eiohard Green, for dlowing nine head of cattle te wander, was fined 5s and costs; Wm. Cartwright, for leaving his horse and vehicle withont attendance, was fined 10s and costs; Charles Haohard, for getting on to a train while in motion, was
fined 10s and costs; for having an unregistered dog, Samuel Dodge was fined 2Gs and costs; a similar case against James Eowton was dismissed. A charge against F. Mulholland, a cabman, for preventing another cabman from getting a fare, was dismissed. Mr Holmes appeared for defendant, and, as the evidence quite broke down, he asked for coats to be allowed to defendant. His Worship said he saw no reason why that course should be followed in this case. Michael Lawlor, for allowing his cow to be at large, fined 5s and costs. Wm. Collins, for a similar offence, fined 5s and costs. Martha Burgess was charged with using atmive language to Helc m Stokes. Complainant stated her case, aid catled her daughter, a ohild twelve or thirteen years old, who gave her evidence in such a disgustingly pert manner as to require checking. After hearing the other side the case was dismissed as frivolous. Mary Woods and Mary Daly were charged with throwing stones at Martha Hoskin; the charge apainat Daly was withdrawn, Woods was fined 10s.
