PROMENADE CONCERT.

A very succisjful promenade concert took place last evening in Tatteraa.il’*, in aid of the funds of St. Paul’s Church, Papanui. Messrs H. Matson and Co., with commendable liberality, placed their very spacious building at the disposal of { the committee, and not only so, but decorated it with flags, &o. At the northern end of the building was placed a platform for the musicians and vocalists taking part in the concert, whilst the classically named part of tte building, viz, the forum, was thronged with the youth and beauty, not alone of the rising suburb of Papanui, but the metropolis itself. Without wishing to be considered hypercritical, it might _be suggested that on future occasions of a similar kind the platform should be brought further forward than it was last night. Though, no doubt, without wishing for one moment to disparage the efforts of the Railway band, distance lends enchantment to braes band music, the same does not apply to reed and strings, such as the amateur Orchestral band or vocal efforts. The programme was a very well selected one, the Railway and Orchestral bands and a glee party contributing considerably to the enjoyment of those present. Altogether the concert was a decided success, and the committee are indebted to the prompt liberality of Matson and Co. for so admirable a place for the purpose.
