THE SEASON IN WELLINGTON.
Reports from the country districts (says the “ N Z. Times ”) are not nearly so favourable as was generally expected at ibis time of the year. The unusually mild winter, accompanied as it was by frequent warm rains, justified the impression that feed would be abundant during the late winter months and spring, and that wool and live stock would be in excellent condition. The six weeks just past have done a good deal to modify the expectations of stockholders. In ithe Wairaraps, where, for some reason that pan scarcely be aco.) unted for, feed had got very short during the months of June and July, although there was abundance in the preceding autumn, the six weeks’ dry and windy weather at a time when there is usually an excess of moisture has done a great deal to chock the growth of grass, and it is feared that it will not fully recover on many of the runs. The drought has no doubt affected grain crops, though probably to a much smaller extent. As regards the wool little harm can be done, as the shears will pass through the parts of the staple which would be weakened. Lambs are said to be doing remarkably wel', the warm weather having given those which were dropped early in the season a rare chance of gathering strength ; but the percentage is reported to be rather low. This may, however, look very different at the close of the season.
