BENEVOLENT AID ASSOCIATION.
The adjourned meeting of the subscribers was held at 4 p.m. yesterday, in the City Council Chambers. Present —His Worship the Mayor (in tho chair), Bev. H, O. M. Watson, Bov. G. Penny, Bev. H. Flavell, Very Rev. the Bean of Ohristchuroh, Messrs H. W. Packer, Hobday, Pratt, Ollivier, Mitchell (non. sec ), W. H. Hargreaves, W. Harris, J. E. March, Alport, Morton, O. B. Taylor, O. E. Brigge. The Mayor said that this was an adjourned meeting to consider the question of the continuance or otherwise of the association. He regrottod to see so email an attendance that day, as, with the exception of one or two gentlemen, t he meeting was the same as last week. He saw only throe clergymen there out of the number in the district. Several appeals had been made to the benevolent, but with the exception of a cheque from Mr Wilkin, he had only received £2 103 that week. It seemed, therefore, almost inoumbent upon the committee to consider the closing of the soup kitchen, as it was called. It vould be for tho meeting to decide now whether the operations of the Association should continue.
Mr Ollivier moved—" That the operations of the Benevolent Association be continued for a further period of six months, withja view to the relief of any cases of necessity which may be still on their list and any other emergency cases which shall arise. That means be taken for the formation of a Benevolent Association, to include the operations of the Charitable Aid Board." Bev. W. Flavell seconded the motion.
A long discussion ensued, in which tho Very Rev. the Bean, Bevs. Lingard, Watson, Jflavell, Penny, the Mayor, Messrs H. Thomson, Alport, W. B. Mitchell, took part. Mr Ollivier then divided his motion into two parts, concluding tho first one at the words " shall ariso," which was then put and carried.
Mr Ollivier then moved the following : "That a committee of twenty-four persons be formed to consider the advisableneas of forming a Permanent Benevolent Association, to take over the existing system of charitable aid, to include the Old Man's Home ; to report to a public meeting, to be convened for the purpose. The committee to consist of members of the present Benevolent Aid Association committee—Very Rev. the Bean, Rev. H. O. M. WatsoD, Flavell, Lingard, Penny, Elmslie, Reid, and Williams, and Father Ginaty, Messrs Hobday, Alport, and Harris." Bev. Mr Watson seconded the motion, whioh was agreed to. The Mayor said that the question was, what was to be done with regard to the amount now due by the association. Mr Hobday had offered another £5, and Mr Collier, of the Boyal George Hotel, had generously offered to give from ten to twelve tons of potatoes. Mr Ollivier offered to give a week's canvassing in aid of the funds. Messrs Ollivier, Harris, Pratt, Thomson, Packer, and Mitchell handed in their names as collectors.
