SYDENHAM BOROUGH COUNCIL.
The fortnightly meeting of this Council was held last night in the Council Chamber at seven o'olock. Present —His Worship the Mayor and all the councillors, except Or. LangdowD, from whom an apology was received. The Mayor reported the result of the late publio meeting re tho proposed loan of £30,000. A letter was read from Mr Boyle, relinquishing tenancy of 100 acres of the Sydenham endowment land rented by him. Referred to finance committee. The Board of Hoalth wrote, forwarding a copy of the Public Health Act, and asking the Council to make any suggestion on the matter for the Board's aotion. Consideration was deferred till next meeting of the Oouucil. A petition from certain residents in Third and Hawdon streets, praying that a lamp might be erected at the junction of the two streets, was referred to the lighting committee. The works committee's report was read. Mr Harman's application re making the private streets laid out on rural section No. 17 at that gentleman's cost was recommended, he being allowed a rebate of 6d per load on the surplus earth removed. The complaint of Mr Hewitt respecting the state of Montreal stroet was considered, the committee being of opinion that concrete channelling was necessary to permanently abate the nuisance. The Mount Hutt Road Board's request to take gravel from the Counoil's reserve at Methvec, was approved, the Board to receive notice that the Council require compensation for the gravel so removed at the rate of 6d per cubio yard. The Rakaia and Ashburton Forks Railway Company's proposal to take certain land of the Borough reserve fronting on tho railway, being considered unsatisfactory, the Council were recommended not to accede to the same. It was notified that the contract for the construction of the private streets on rural section 74 was completed. The report was approved. The fortnight's receipts were stated to be £457 10s 8d ; expenditure, £945 10a Id (including Drainage Board and Waimakariri rates). Present Bank credit balance, £990 19s Id. Or. Joyce moved—" That the town clerk be requested to prepare a petition to the Governor, having for its object the division of the borough into four wards, and that the borough ranger take round such petition to get the burgesses to sign same." Cr. Nicholls seconded the motion. After a long discussion it was agreed that a petition as suggested be drawn up, and left for signature in the Borough Council Chambers. Cr. White wished some action to be taken rospooling the title to tho Chertsey reserve, and after considerable discussion, the town clerk was instructed to apply again to tho Commissioner of Crown Lands for a title. It was resolved to write to the Minister for Lands on the matter. On the motion of Or. Hall, the Council expressed its appreciation of the very great interest always shown by the town clerk in the welfare of tho borough. It was resolved to write to the following municipalities, viz,, Thames, Napier, Wanganui, Nelson, Groymouth, Lyttelfcon, Timaru, Oamaru, and InvorcaT«ill, asking the amount of salaries paid their officers, and the rateable value of the properties in each borough for the year. Tho Mayor called attention to the Government having determined to reduce Mr March's salary by onehalf, the districts affected by tho Charitable Aid Board being expected to make up tho difference. It was resolved that the Council declines to pay any part of Mr March's salary, and would suggest that the Board engege an officer of its own, this without reflecting on that gentleman. It was agroed that in future Mona street should be called Huxley Btroet. The question of watering Colombo road wan deferred till it was known what the Tramway Company would do on their lino of route.
