SUNFLOWER SEED FOR POULTRY.
It is said by experienced poultry-breeders that sunflower seeds form excellent food for fowls when mixed with other feed. Sunflower seeds are believed to impart that desirab’o gloss to the feathers which fanciers so much like to see at show time, and take so much trouble to obtain for their birds. It might be worth while growing the sunflower for poultry food, especially as maize is so dear, and wheat dearer. In America (so says the “Poultry World”) the common sunflower has long been grown by well-informed fanciers annually and largely for this purpose ; but the Mammoth Russian seed (Helianthus annuue) has proved moat useful. A well-known poultry raiser who has a great number of olive trees growing upon his property, feeds his birds part of the year upon olives. The result is that his birds are healthy, fat, and fitted for the table at comparatively trifling cost. There is little doubt that poultry might be raised at lees expanse, and made to bring in better profit, if more attention were given to tho production of food for them.
