THEATRE ROYAL.

At this theatre, last evening, the "Shaughraun,” one of Bouoicault’a most popular Irish dramas, was produced for the benefit of Mr Walter Eeynolds. There was a very good house, though not so large as might have been looked for considering that gentleman’s popularity in Christchurch. Generally the piece was fairly put on the stage, albeit there were occasional evidences of insufficient rehearsal. Mr Reynolds appeared as Con, and gave a happy and effective rendering of the part, although he had many difficulties to contend against which need not necessarily be dilated on. Miss Grace Hathaway made her first appearance in Christchurch in the character of Moya. This lady posses qualities calculated to make her a favorite with theatre goers. Ladylike and natural in her acting, and possessing a sweet and sympathetic voice, she appeared to advantage in these respects on making her dehut, but it is not difficult to conceive impersonations in which Miss Hathaway would feel more thoroughly at home. At the game time, it would have been difficult to find a more fitting representative of tho character of Moya among the members of tho dramatic company as at present constituted. Mrs Hill played Claire Ffolliott fairly, and Miss Vivian gave an excellent rendering of the part of Mrs Kelly. Mr Musgrave acted with characteristic care and ability as Father Doolan. It is not deemed necessary to further particularise the acting in this piece, Lieut. Herman kindly gave a short ventriloquial entertainment at the conclusion of tho drama.
