THE ENGLISH MARKETS.
The following is Messrs Miles BeOS. and Co.’s Colonial Produce Report, dated London, August 12th: — WOOL. There has been but little passing in our wool market lately, owing to the near approach of the sales, which have been fixed to commence on the 17 th inst., with a tot A quantity of, say, 315,01)0 bales. Onr English wools have advanced slightly, ap.d there is rather a more cheerful tone in our woollen districts, where a fair amount of business is doing, trade in Germany being also pretty brisk, but reports from France are still a little unsatisfactory. The Havre Eiver Plate wool auctions opened on tho 10th inst., with a moderate attendance of buyers, but only 373 out of 1900 bales were disposed of at a decline of id to Id per lb. on May auctions. - The fresh arrivals to date comprise : Bales. New South Wales and Queensland P 6.980 Victoria 114,200 Sonth Australia 13,157 Western Australia ... ... 716 Tasmania ... ... ... 18,890 New Zealand 19,730 Cape of Good Hope 68,900 Total 332,573 Of which about 31,010 bales have been forwarded direct from ship to Continent and the North, and there are about 20,000 bales old stock. WHEAT AND FLOUR. Notwithstanding the injary done to our crops by the recent severe storms, prices for wheats have been gradually declining and are now about about 2s 6d per qr. lower than they were a fortnight since, in consequence of the heavy supplies which are reaching us from America, and a falling off in the Continental demands. Although American red winter wheat to arrive is offered at 43s per 4801 b, but little business is passing, and 44s per 6001 b is asked for Californian for immediate shipment. There is scarcely any speculation in the trade, and millers are baying very sparingly, and country buyers are taking New Zealand wheal rather freely, and fair average samples are bringing 47s 6d. We quote on the spot Australian wheat, 49s to 51s, and New Zealand, 46s to 495, and 50s to 51s for fine long berried samples per 4961 b. Australian flonr, 34s to 365, and New Zealand, 32s to 34s per 2801 b. New Zealand oats, 26s to 3Gs per imperial qr., according to quality. TALLOW AND HIDES. The tallow market has continued firm during the past fortnight, and Russian T.K. is still quoted at 40a per cwt. Australian sorts have been in strong request, and all that was offered on Friday last sold at advanced prices, good to fine mutton realising 35s to 36s 6d, and fair to fine beet 33s to 34s 3d per cwt. The stock to day in first hands is about 8800 casks, and shipments are delayed. Wo estimate the quantity afloat at about 30,000 casks. There have been no sales of hides since tho Ist instant. Tho next auctions are fixed for tho 19th instant. PRESERVED MEATS. The trade generally is more active, and mutton is dearer. Fancy goods have been in great request during the warm weather. American f.esh meat has been rather dull of sale, but there is some talk of establishing local markets for tho sale of it in different parts of the metropolis. Bank rate, 2i per cent.
