POETRY.
PEARLS. Amidst the music of the dance, The waltz’s undulating swell, I saw the creamy necklace glance ; And while her bosom rose and fell. Like foam flakes on a snow-white sea. Around her neck, beneath her curls, Now clinging close, now floating free, The twilight glimmering of her pearls. And like the Egyptian, who of old Dissolved a pearl in flowing wine ; Ah, thus in Pleasure’s cup of gold, I cast this pricelass love of mine. I leave the goblet in your hands ; Then drink it if yon will, my sweet. Had I the gems of K astern lands, I’d oast their tribute at your feet. Upon the far-off Southern sea, The Indian diver 'noath the waves Braves ocean dangers all for thee. Betides the flashing coral caves. And I, my darling, I would dare As much and more, my queen of girls, If I might only hope to win Thy love—a priceless pearl of pearls 1
