AMBERLEY DRAINAGE.

With the view of improving the sanatory condition of this township a large deputation wailed on the Kowai Road Board at its list meeting to ask the Board’s assistance to clean out what is known as the Dock Creek, with the view of obtaining a larger volume of water in the creek running through the township. In order to thoroughly understand the proposal, Messrs. Ensor (chairman), Coleman, Mathers and McDonald, members of the Board, yesterday visited the locality, and carefully examined the various drains and creeks that are affected by the proposal. After the inspection the Board met the landowners direotly interested, and a long discussion took place. There seemed to be two creeks, or what afterwards appear as two creeks, having a common source,® and though the face of the country has been very materially altered by drainage, the impression seemed to be that the creek crossing the North road into Mr Courage’s land is entitled to certain water, though the way that water is at present led into it was characterised as a diversion. Dock Creek would clearly, were it opened up to the extent of the public drain, receive a very considerable quantity of water now running to waste near Mr Bristow’s preperty. The chairman of the Board stated that though the Board might consider the question of contributing towards the cost of opening up the drain reserve of the Dock Creek, they could not bind future Boards to the annual expense of cleaning it. Mr Qreig, in reply to a question, would like to know what the cost would be, and suggested calling for tenders. After a long discussion and an expression of various opinions, the chairman stated that the surveyor would be instructed to estimate the cost of the drain from Mr Griffith’s land to the middle fence of that occupied by Mr W. Rutherford, and also the cleaning out of the Dock Creek into Mr Bristow’s land. A survey would be necessary if the latter work were undertaken, as the drain reserve and the creek were by some error not the same.
