ASHBURTON BOROUGH COUNCIL.
A first meeting of the above newly constituted Council was held last Monday evening. Messrs Leggett, Favitt, Duncan, Wood, and Cookson waited upon the Council as a deputation to support a petition praying for steps to be taken to drain Wills, Peters, and Cox streets, as they were in a state that was dangerous to the health of the residents. After some discussion, Mr Ivess, in n lengthy speech, deprecated the apathy shown by the Council in such matters, and moved that the petition be received. The Mayor assured the deputation that everything that could possibly be done would be done, 'i he deputation then withdrew. The Mayor’s statement showed the balance to credit to be £69 Is 10d. A .letter from the engineer referring to his salary Laving been read, Mr Ivess moved that its consideration be deferred till next meeting. Hi St. Hill moved,as an amendment —“That I the thanks of this Council be accorded to Mr Books for the very successful manner in which he has brought the water into town, and that his services be retained at the rate agreed upon with regard to the drainage and water supply scheme.” Mr Ivess, after some diaoussion, withdrew his motion, and the amendment was carried unanimously. His Worship the Mayor, Cra. St. Hill and Ivess wore appointed a committee to interview Messrs Branson and Pu.-ni.ll rc their appointment as Borough solicitors. On the motion of Cr. Harrison, a vote of thanks was passed to his Worship the Mayor for his action re Borough subsidy. Cr. Ivess gave notice that at next meeting ho would move—l. “That tenders be invited for the formation and kerbing of the footpaths in Cox street.” 2. “ That the services of the Town Cl rk be dispensed with at the expiry of his present engagement, and that the offices of borough surveyor and town clerk bo amalgamated, at a salary of £2OO per year. Applications from gentlemen willing to discharge the duties to bo invited hr, advertisement in the Christchurch and Ashburton papers, to be considered by the Council on October 18th.” 3. “That the resolution authorising the salo cf the iron pipes purchased from a vote made by the Ashburton County Council in favor of a water supply for the Borough of Ashburton be rescinded, on the ground that the Council has no power to divert the proceeds from the specific object for which the money was voted, as the resolution authorising the vote expressly stipulated that it was granted for a ‘ water supply ’ for the Borough of Ashburton.” The Council adjourned at 11 o'clock.
