THE LIGURIAN BEE.

A correspondent writing to a Dunedin paper says: “The Acclimatisation Society Pave made one or two rather serious mistakes, notably tho introduction of of the rabbit and sparrow. I fear they are about to commit another error by the importation of tho Ligurian bee. About twenty years ago these bees were introduced into Victoria by Mr Edward Wilson, of the Argus. Soon after a deluge of correspondence flooded that paper on the ravages of the Italian invader. It was asserted that it was not only profitless, but that it destroyed the common bee as completely as the Norway rat did the English rodent. Not knowing anything about bees myself, I do not know the result of the introduction of this insect. Perhaps it would be well that the matter were discussed before the threatened consignment are liberated.”
