VITAL STATISTICS.
The following are the vital statistics fer the month of August:—
The deaths of persons not residents of the boroughs, occurring at hospitals, have been excluded in all cases. In the cate of Nelson the population is given according to the estimates for January, 1879, as the local authorities have not yet supplied the information necessary to enable tho estimate to be corrected. In the other cases the estimates are for the Ist January, 1880. The total births in the above boroughs amounted to 514, against 545 in July, being a decrease of 31. The deaths amounted to 167 in August, the same number as in July. Of tho above deaths, males contributed 105, females 62. 80 of the deaths were of children under five years of age, being 47.90 per cent, of the whole number ; 56 of these were of children under one year of age.
