ROAD BOARDS.

COURTENAY. A meeting of the Board was held on Tuesday, Sop’ember 14th, 1880. Present—Hon. Colonel Brett (chairman/, Messrs. Mathias, Anson, and Gough. Correspondence was read as folio F.-um the Treasury, Wellington, advising the payment of £471 4s, the Board’s share of balance of £IOO,OOO surplus land revenue, to the credit of the Board’s account with the Bank of Now Zealand. From the Bank of New Zealand, acknowledging receipt c£ the above sum. Several letters from the game in connection with the Board’s banking account. From the Assistant Engineer for Canterbury Railways, acknowledging receipt of letter from the Board, with legal opinion respecting level crossing at the Sandy Knolls and Burnham road crossing of the railway line. From the same, reporting receipt of instructions to put down level crossing, as requested by the Board, at an early date. From the Kimberley Domain Board, applying for grant of money in aid of tree planting. Granted £5. From the chairman of the Kimberley school committee, reporting that another case of diphtheria had broken out in that part of the district, and in consequence thereof he has thought it advisable to close the school for the present. From the Courtenay Farmers’ Club, applying to be allowed the use of the Board’s larger room for the purpose of holding their meetings in. Deferred till next meeting of the Board. The surveyor’s report was read and considered. Several ratepayers having failed to cpjjply with the notice florvod upon them to trim fences and remove gores from roads, the surveyor was instructed to inform them that if the work is not done within ten days from the date of his notifying the same, the Board will put on men to do the work, and take legal proceedings for the recovery of the expanse, as well as for penalties incurred for obstruction or damage to roads. Resolved—“ That the gravel reserves already ploughed bs ploughed a second Cams and sown with gum seeds as soon as Eossible.” Tenders were opened for the diftrent pieces of formation advertised, and one in each case accepted. The clerk was authorised to advertise for tenders for several pieces of formation and metalling. The pay sheet, amounting to £99 12s 2d, was adopted and passed for payment. The Board adjourned till Tuesday, October 12th. OUST. The usual monthly meeting was held on September 13 th. There were present—Mr J. D. Dickinson, chairman, as also Messrs Anderson, Ruddenklau, Biddle and Grant. Correspondence daring the month was read in the usual way, and the clerk was instructed to write to Mr Williams to take a proper survey and levels at the Bennetts, The clerk was directed to write to Wellington for copies of various Acta for the use of the Board. This Board acknowledged the receipt of £ll7 6s lOd received from the Government as their share of the Surplus Land Fund. Mr Joseph Atkinson wrote requesting an extension of time to carry out a contract, he having received an injury. Granted. The clerk was directed to call for tenders for widening and clearing of the main drain immediately, from tho New Swamp road towards the east, so as to allow of the water passing from the new road into such part of the main drain already opened out. It was decided that the members of the Board ehould visit tho New Swamp road on Monday afternoon, and adjourn to the Board’s office at 4 p.m. to receive tenders. The clerk instructed to inspect Baiter's bridge, and to invite tenders for constructing a new fence, consisting of two sod wall with posts and two rails along the new road by Mr D. Jones’ land for forty chains more or less, contractor to get such materials from the Board’s site at railway station the Oust. Also to invite tenders for shingling of O’Farrell’a road, at 15 cubic yards to the chain. Tho clerk was instructed to visit the East Boundary road, and report best available track to be made towards the River Ashley ; and the clerk was further directed to see to sundry work near the Moeraki station, and to tender for forming a piece of the road near Mr Smart’s. Tenders were opened for such works tendered for, and in each cate one was accepted. The Board decided to strike a rate of 6d in the £ on all rateable properties in the district, and the clerk was directed to publish the same. Accounts to the amount of £99 16s 61 were passed for payment, and the Board adjourned.

LITTLE RIVER. Tho monthly meeting of this Board was held on Monday, the 6th inst,, all the members being present. Letters were received— From the Secretary to the Treasury, with particulars of remittance of the sum of £lB3 IBs 6d to tho credit of the district fund account, share of surplus land revenue. From the manager of the Union Bank in relation to same. From the chairman of the Fort Levy Road Board, in reference to the road laid off up the Port Levy spur, western valley. From Mr Darby, surveyor, suggesting that iron spikes be placed at intervals along lines of roads at present being laid off by him in the course of his survey on Mr Buchanan’s run ; also, offering his services in grading roads, preparing specifications, and estimating quantities for any work required. From Mr Superintendent Brohatn, stating that reserve 1258, originally set apart for police purposes, will not be required by the department. This is in reply to an application made by the Board for a portion of said reserve for a quarry. From tho Halawell Road Board, inclosing copy of a resolution adopted by that Board relative to the boundary between the two districts. From Mr A. O. Knight in reference to a proposed road diversion through his land on the Island Bay Spur. From Messrs. Harper and Scott, relative to transfer of land for a pound at Little River, From Mr Brooks, asking for information regarding the intentions of the Board in the matter of the road from Barry’s Saddle to Okute Valley. From Dr. Doyle (three letters) appertaining to various matters affecting hia property at Ahutiti. A petition was received from a number of residents at Little Biver, protesting against any further expenditure on tho Barry’s Saddle and Okute Valley road Junction, and urging that all available funds be used on the Main Christchurch road on the margin of Lake Forsyth, in widening and improving the same. An account ior £2l was sent iu by Messrs. Fenton and Wilkin for supervision of Mr McPhail’s contract on Mount Bossu and Like Forsjth summit road. Mr Parkinson also produced the transfer of Hepworth township from Mr R. H. Rhodes to public account. Mr Mortleman interviewed the Board on behalf of the Port Levy Road Board, in relation to the subject matter contained in the letter from the chairman to that Board iu connection with the road line laid off up tho Port Levy spur, on the western valley side of tho range, with the object of getting an alteration made so ci to connect with a road in course of construction by them. The matter to be further considered. Resolved —“ That considering the financial position of tho Board, and tho prospect of any further acquisitions to the fund, being doubtful, no new works be entered into at present outside of roada already made and in use, and that the petition in reference to Barry’s Saddle Junction he acknowledged, but that the formation be one of the first put in hand when the funds will admit. Also, that some rocks be removed and other improvements on tho margin or Lake Forsyth proceeded with.” A deputation waited on the Board with tho object of getting about twenty chains of road formed on the north side of McQueen’s Island. It was resolved—" That an it was represented the application had been made on a previous occasion, and a promise made by the Board that it should bs done, to invite tenders for the work.” In reference to the lot'or from the Halswell Board the members did not seo any reoson to depart from their original decision on the subject. An offer having been made by Mr Jno. Driscoll, to complete about 15 chains of formation at tho junction of the Christchurch and Lyttelton roads, it w&s agreed upon to do it. The Board agreed to give something to Dr Doyle towards his bridge, but regretted they had not been coneultod with regard to ite erection, it being voted a blunder. Mr Knight and Mr Wright to be communicated with about the road through the former’s property. Several tenders were opened, and two accepted.
