KAIAPOI BOROUGH COUNCIL.
The fortnightly meeting of this Council was held on Tuesday evening. Present —The Mayor (Mr Blackwell), Ors. Moore, Smith, Fraser, Stanton, Mathews, Woodford, Monk, and Pinching. Ors. Fraser and Mathews made the declaration required from newlyelected Councillors. Letters were read from Mr O. J. Champion, offering £2O a year for office at Council Chamber. Accepted ; rent to be paid quarterly, and three months' notice to terminate the agreement. From Mr Hurse, relative to gorse and broom growing on Beach road. Referred to works committee. From Mr R. W. Smith, tendering his resignation as chief fire inspector. Accepted. From Mr G. T. Pearce, resigning his office as second fire inspector. Accepted. Prom the Brigade, resigning in a body. Prom firemen Brighting, Hornby, Bates and Goldthorpe, stating they were not parties to the action taken by the brigade at a meeting on 6th, and had no intention of resigning. On motion of Or. Smith, seconded by Or. Woodford, it was resolved “ That a hearty vote of thanks bo recorded to Mr R. W. Smith and members of the fire brigade for their efficient services in the past, and they express their sorrow at such a trifling matter disturbing the harmony between the Council and the brigade.” From twenty-one residents offering to form a new brigade, under Mr Blackwell as inspector. It was decided that the offer be accepted, and Mr Blackwell appointed chief fire inspector and superintendent of the brigade, pro tern. An account from the brigade was referred to the fire prevention committee. On motion of Cr. Woodford, seconded by Or. Pinching, a vote of thanks was recorded on the minutes to firemen. Brighting, Hornby, Bates, and Q-oldthorpe, for having stuck to their duty in the brigade. It was decided that the brigade be asked to recommend a fire inspector for appointment. Cr. Moore, 1 chairman works’ committee, reported the Peraki street drain completed, the suspension bridge painted, that persons interested in Beach road drain refused to sign another agreement, having already signed one which the council had accepted. The committee advised fencing end of Oaes street, and protecting end of Sewell street from the river at a cost of £SO. Cr. Fraser, chairman finance committee, reported the balance in hand to be £lO5 8s lid.* Accounts, £37 15s 3d, were passed. Votes of thanks were passed to retiring committees. The new committees elected were —works and planting, Or. Moore (chairman), Stanton and Mathews; fire brigade, licence, finance, and lighting, Or. Fraser (chairman), May and Monk. The question of the railway siding in Raven quay was again discussed, and it was again decided to ask the member for the district to use hie influence in having the work done. On motion of Or. Pinching, seconded by Cr. Smith, it was decided to have the agreement from the residents on Beach road drain stamped, and the work be commenced. The council then then adjourned.
