NEW ZEALAND RIFLE ASSOCIATION.

Lieutenant Appleby has received a circular letter from the secretary of the association at Wellington, which |ives some particulars of the working of the association and its expenditure for last year. Summarised it is as follows : The statement of last year’s accounts show that only £ll2 17s 6d was received as Volunteer subscriptions, and £24 2s from ordinary members, as against £IBO la 6i and £6119s the previous year. Nevertheless, £IOO3 10s was distributed in money prizes, including the Government grant. For the coming year (1881) a reduced vote of £SOO has been obtained from the Government. The amount of fixed prize money for the coming March meeting is £7OO, but the Council look for extra exertions on the part of Volunteers to enable them to carry out the projected programme. A special appeal is made to companies to subscribe to the 11 Company’s Trophy,” a new match for both rifles and carbines. The following is a summary of the matches and partioulara thereof —The third prize meeting will be held at Brightwater, near Nelson, on the day of March, 1881. There are nineteen matches in all, seven for rifles, seven for carbines, and five for any member, to be shot for under the rules of the Association :

For rifles only, there will be match No. 2 (200 yards) ; twelve prizes; amount £35 ; No. 4 (400, 500 and 600 yards), nineteen prizes, £SO; No. 6 (200, 400, 500 and 600 yards), nineteen prizes, £6O; No. 9 (200 and 500 yards), fourteen prizes, £SO. For Carbines Only.—Match 3 (200 yards), twelve prizes, £35; match 5 (200, 400 and 500 yards), nineteen prizes, £SO; match 7 (200,'300, 400 and 500 yards), nineteen prizes, £6O ; match 10 (200 and 400 yards) ; fourteen prizes, £SO. For any Member. —To be shot with rifles of Government pattern : Match 1 (200, 400 and 500 yards), twenty-three prizes, £7O ; match 8 (300, 400 and 500 yards), twenty-six prizes, £6O.

If thft National Bifle Association Silver Medal arrives in the colony in time it will be competed for under conditions to be named by tbe council. North v South (Eifles) —200, 500 and 600 yards ; open only te the ten highest aggregate scores belonging to each island in matches 2, 4,6, and 9. North v South (Carbines) —200, 400, and 500 yards; open only to the ton_ highest aggregate scores belonging to each island in matches 3,5, 7, Ladies’ Prize—2oo, 250, and 300 yards ; open to any member ; prizes : £5 given by the association, and three-fourths entries of Bifle Company’s Trophy—2oo, 500, and 600 yards ; to be competed for only by company representatives, one competitor to each company allowed; entrance £1 each; entrance money to be devoted to the purchase of a trophy, to bo deemed the property of the corps to which the winner may belong. Carbine Company’s Trophy~2oo, 400 and 500 yards ; conditions similar to rifle trophy. Bifle Company’s Challenge Match—Five members of a company to constitute a team ; ranges, 200, 400, 500 and 600 yards. Prizes —(1.) Bifle Challenge Cup, to bo held by the team for twelve months, and £25 to tbe highest team ; (2.) £lO to the second highest team; (3) £5 to the third highest team.

Carbine Company’s Challenge Match— Eanges, 200, 300, 400 and 500 yards ; similar prizes to the rifle match. Any Members’ Match —Any rifle ; 700, 800 and 1000 yards. Consolation Match—2oo, 300 and 400 yards. It will be seen from the above list that rifles and carbines are treated exactly alike both as to the number of matches and the value of prizes.
