MagisterialJoseph Boberts, for attempting to rob the till of the Boyal Hotel, was sentenced to four weeks’ imprisonment. Hospital and Charitable Aid. The Government has written to the City Council, asking them to take over the management of the Hospital and Charitable Aid, including the Benevolent Institution, requesting that the Government will pay half tbo cost, also ton per cant, subsidies for nine months. The Hospital committee of the
Council has recommended that this arrangement be acceded to. The Waimate PlainsThe Now Plymouth Constabulary are expecting to make a move shortly from camp, when eighty men and three officers will be stationed at the township of Mania, near that portion of the plains which is to be offered for sale. There has been a rumor about town to-day that some active operations were about to take place, for all mounted men from White Cliffs have passed through, singly, half a mile apart, as if wishing to avoid being noticed as they passed along. The Longwood Goldfield. About 100 acres of land were Bold in the Longwood district, at an average of £8 4s per acre. The prospects of the Longwood goldfield are said to be greatly improved, owing to the discovery of a fresh reef near Specimen Gully, and better indications are observable in other workings. The meeting of the Chamber of Commerce has appointed a committee to report on the subject of direct shipments from Great Britain, TIMABU, September 15. ArrestJohn Leishman has been remanded to Christchurch on the charge of garotting a man in June last and robbing him of his watch. The watch had been sold in Timaru* and Leisham was traced to Green Island, where he was arrested.

WELLINGTON, September 14, Criminal CalendarThe criminal sessions of the Supreme Court commenced before Mr Justice Johnston this morning. His Honor congratulated the jury on the light calendar, there being five prisoners for trial. The Crown Prosecutor withdrew the indictments against Herman Munn for indecent assault. The Grand Jury found true bills against Doran, cutting and wounding, Nicholson burglary, Clifford perjury, Mary Garrison larcenv. TIMABU, September 14, Municipal lawThe Corporation have been defeated in an attempt to exact a license fee from a milk retailer on the ground that they are psdlera and hawkers. A test prosecution was decided to-day with costa against the Borough Council. DUNEDIN, September 14. The Rival Universities. The Otago University Council has forwarded to the Chancellor of the New Zealand University a copy of a resolution passed by the Professorial Board to the effect that—- “ The persons appointed by tbb Chancellor of New Zealand University at the last examination to examine in political economy, human anatomy, and physiology, were neither expert in, nor had ever been engaged in, teaching the subjects in which they examined.” fPEOM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.] WELLINGTON, September 14. Mr Bryce telegraphs to-day that the Pari* haka Natives yesterday seized two horses employed on the Constabulary road work, which had strayed on the Native wheat fields, left exposed through the Maoris pulling down the fences erected by the constabulary along the roadside. The horses were taken to Parihaka, hut one found its way back, and the other is to be sent back to day. Mr Bryce reports that the Natives are becoming more and more insolent and troublesome. They have smashed a number of drain pipes by order of Te Whiti, who says it is in retaliation for some fencing having been accidentally burned by a roadside fire. They also endeavored to stop a roadside surveyor named Hunt, and prevent his proceeding along the road, but Captain Gudgeon happened to bo near and came to the rescue with a detachment of Constabulary, whereupon the Natives promptly deoampecL
Immigration CollapseThe Government have received advices from the Agent-General of the Bailing in August of the following four vessels for New Zealand with nominated immigrants and single women;— For Wellington, Fleione with 195 ‘eouls, including 120 eingle women ; for Lyttelton, Opawa with 205 souls, including 130 single women ; for Auckland, the Wanganui with 157 souls, including 100 single women ; for Port Chalmers, the Dunedin with 214 souls, including 130 single women. Those comprise the final batch of assisted immigrants, and complete the whole of the Government engagements in this direction. The services of tne immigration officers at the various New Zealand ports will not he required until immigration may be resumed at some future date. They are all to ha placed on half-pay and employed on other works so far as possible. Our New Governor-
Government have received advices by the Southern Cross from Fiji to-day that the new Governor,) Sir A. Goroon, is only awaiting the arrival of some important Imperial despatches, which have gone via Sydney before starting for Hew Zealand. He may, therefore, be expected at almost any hoar.
