FATAL FIRE AT RICCARTON.
About 6.15 p.m. on Saturday last a fire broke out in a two-roomed cottage at Biccartou, occupied by a man named Robert Windsor, his wife, and two children. The cottage was situated immediately opposite the parsonage. It appears that the mother went out for a short time to get some milk from a neighbour, leaving the two children, aged respectively six and three years, in the cottage; and whilst she was away the fire, from some unaccountable cause, broke out, and the two children perished in the flames. There was such a quantity of burning debris, that it was a long time before any search could bo made for the remains. The mother cf the children and the neighbours smashed the windows, and tried to got into the building ; but the fire was too fierce to allow of an entry being made. Dr. Townond, who happened to be visiting a patient in the vicinity, was quickly on the spot; but, under the circumstances, his services were of no avail. When the ruins were sufficiently cooled to allow of search, the police officer found part of a skull, about the size of a man’s hand. An inquest will be held at 3 p.m. this day, at the Bush Inn, Riccarton. Neither the house, which was built of timber and roofed with corrugated iron, nor its contents were insured.
