CHRISTCHURCH BENEVOLENT ASSOCIATION.
The usual weekly meeting of the committee of the above association was held at eleven o’clock, at the old Post office. Present—The Mayor (in the chair), Messrs J. W. Morton, W. R. Mitchell (Hon. Sec.), H. Thomson, H. W. Packer, W. H. Hargreaves, W. Pratt, J. G. Hawkcs, and J. A. Bird. The Mayor announced subscriptions received by him during the week—viz., W. Montgomery £3 3s, Cuff and Graham £2 2s, J. B. 10s, A Eriend £3, J. Y. Boss £l, J. T. B, £2. A letter was received from Mr A. J. White, inclosing a cheque for £2 2s towards the deficit of the association, and apologising for his non-attendance at meetings.
Donation box subscriptions for a fortnight, 2s. Mr W. D. Wood expressed his intention to repeat his donation of flour. The minutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed. The actual balance at the Bank was stated to be £lO 4s 7d, which, added to the subscriptions received, represented about £23 to the credit of the association.
The caretaker’s report was read. The week’s contributions were —From Anonymous, 2 coats, 1 vest, 2 shirts, 3 pairs socks, 1 pair pants ; Mr W. D. Wood, -ton flour ; Messrs Lightband, Allan and 00,, 29 pairs boots and some odd boots ; Messrs Heywood and Co., 14 tins preserved kidneys. Messrs Culliford, Langdon and Judge, Hopkins, and Green supplied the kitchen with meat for stock, Mr Bosewarne contributing the meat for the house, and Messrs White and 00. bad delivered the balance of coals promised by them. Acting on instructions, no bread has been procured during the latter part of the week. The accounts duo by the Association as delivered represent a total of £73 4s 6d. The distribution of relief during the past week was —2 bags coal, 12 bags potatoes, 16 yards flannel, 1 pair boots, 18 yards calico, 1 pair blankets and 1 single blanket, 61bs. rice, 121bs. sago, 501bs. flour, lOlba. oatmeal, 5 tins preserved meat, 10 gallons soup daily, and 21 41b. loaves for the week, and some clothing. The stock of barley being exhausted, peas had been substituted in soup making, but tho stock of the latter would be exhausted in four days. Several accounts were passed for payment. A conversational discussion arose respecting tho date of closing tho Soup Kitchen, and it was ultimately decided to continue all possible relief till September 30th, Mr J. Q-. Hawkos moved, Mr J. A. Bird seconded, and it was carried unanimously—- “ That a general meeting of subscribers and all others interested in tho Benevolent Association bo called on Monday, September 20th, at four o’clock, in the Oity Council Chamber, to recive the committee’s report.” It was agreed to call for all accounts duo by the association. The Mayor regretted that their appeal to the benevolent had not been more liberally responded to. The secretary was instructed to draft a report of the past action of the committee, and also statement of liabilities for the forthcoming meeting. This being all the business, the committee adjourned.
