AUCKLAND, September 2. Loss of a SchoonerThe master of the schooner Kauri reports the loss of his veaeel during last night on the rocks lying on the outside of Waiheke. The vessel was loaded with logs at the time. The Kauri was a new vessel, having been built some months ago by Messrs. Ware and Brown for the Auckland Timber Company, by whom she was owned. Hospital Enquiry. The only two witnesses examined at the Hospital inquiry, before Dr. Skae, were Dr. Philson and Goad, late night uurao. Brown, the former head nurse, deolined to attend, and the other witnesses who were concerned in the affair are all away from the Hospital. Bay of Islands Coal. The demand for the Bay of Island coal continues to increase, no less than six steamers having called in last week, taking away a thousand tons of coal. Suspected Case of Drowning. Information has been received to the effect that a young man named John M'lntosh is supposed to have been drowned on Monday last while crossing a river near Mongonui on horseback. The horse, saddle and bridle of the missing youth were found close to the river. No trace of the body has yet been found. Gored by a CowMr Hall, a cooper, resident in Penrose district, went into his paddock this morning to remove a calf from his cow when she savagely attacked him. Hall is seventy years old. He was knocked down by a rußh of the cow, which then trampled on him and attempted to gore him. A neighbor who observed the occurrence at once ran to the assistance of the unfortunate man, and he had considerable difficulty in driving off the infuriated cow. Dr. Scott on examining Hall found that several of his ribs had been broken and his lungs perforated from which air was escaping. He held out no hope of reoovery. The GovernorThe City Council have authorised the Mayor and Town Clerk to prepare and present an address to the Governor on his arrival, on behalf of the Council. Society of Arts. A Society of Arts has been formed, with sixty members. Dr. Campbell has been elected president. The Unemployed. Mr Garrard interviewed some of the Auckland members to-day relative to the unemployed, and invited them to an open air meeting of the unemployed to-morrow. Mr Swanson gave him a rebuff. He said that he had had three months of that sort of thing. WELLINGTON, September 2. IS Z- Rifle Association. The council of the New Zealand Rifle Association has concluded its sittings. The accounts for the last year show a, debit balance, mainly on account of the paucity of subscriptions. The Government has obtained a vote of £SOO for the association, with which the council hope to be able to have another meeting at Nelson. The programme for the next meeting has been prepared, showing a total prize list of over £6OO, in addition to matches in which the entrance fee will be divided. The company team matches have been improved, the first prize in each being a cup and £25. A new match for a trophy has been introduced, to be shot for by one representative from each company. The Melbourne Exhibition. Intimation has been received from Melbourne that one-sixth more space than was originally allotted has, at the request of the oxecutive commissioner, Dr. Hector, been given by tho Melbourne Exhibition Commissioners for the extension of the New Zealand court at the Melbourne Exhibition. Ehodes v. Rhodes. At the Supreme Court in banco leave was given to appeal to the Privy Council in the case of Rhodes v Rhodes. Naval Brigade. At the parade of the Naval Brigade Capt. Purvis, of H.M.S. Danae, who inspected the corps, complimented the men upon thtir efficiency. O AMARU, September 2. Engine Off the LineAn accident happened to the express train from the North to-day, on account of a horse being on the line. The cow-catcher caught the animal, but did not throw it off, and tho engine loft tho motals, requiring an hour and a half's work to replace it. The train did not arrive at Oamaru until 5 o'clock. The Waterworks. The water from the Waitaki was let into the reservoir to-day. There was a small demonstration, and a number of speeches were delivered. |Thero will now be a full pressure of water throughout the town. INVEROARGILL, September 2. Mr McCaughan, M.HRMr P. K. McCaughan, M.H.R. for River ton, has been invited to a banquet at Winton in the course of a few days. The secretary to the banquet committee writes to Mr McCaughan, saying—"Your conduct since you havo been our representative has given the greatest amount of satisfaction, and has largely added to thy number of your supporters."

The Waikaia Seat. A numerously ginned requisition has been presented to Mr J. P. Jovco, formerly member for Wallace, asking him to contest the Waikaiii Beat. WELLINGTON, September 2. Sale of Part of Waimate Plains. I hear that seven thousand acres of the Waimate Plains will be open for sale on October 25th, this being a preliminary sale o* the block. One-third of the total area will be for sale on deferred payments, extending over ten years, at five pounds per acre, and the remainder for cash at four pounds. Village settlements are also being laid out, regarding which I expect to be able to send further particulars to-morrow. Ministerial Movements. Major Atkinson leaves Wellington this evening for Taranaki. Mr Kolleston goes to Lyttelton to-morrow by the Taiaroa. The Attorney-General, Mr Whitaker, also goes by the Taiaroa to Lyttelton to spend a few days with friends in Canterbury, and Mr Dick leaves by the same steamer for Dunedin. On their return, their colleague will follow suit, and all the Ministry will re-assemble in Wellington at the end of the month.
