SELWYN COUNTY COUNCIL.
Tho usual monthly meeting of the above Council was hold yesterday. Present —Messrs E. J. Lee (chairman), J. L. Wilson, H. J. Mathias, Peryman, McMillan, and Enys. A report was read from Mr E. Dobson as to the progress made with the works under his charge. With respect to tho Hororata water race, it was resolved —“ That no further work in connection with it should bo gone on with until the members had made an inspection of that already carried cut.” Letters were read from the solicitor to the Council and the Riccarton Road Board with reference to the question of tho park roads being under the control of the County Council. It was decided to allow tho matter to stand over for the present, A letter was read from tho manager of the National Bank of Now Zealand with reference to modification of the terme of the banking agreement. It was resolved —“ That tho matter bo left in tho hands of the chairman to arrange.” With reference to tho road to Rakaia Gorge, the chairman of the Council was authorised to pay tho balance of special grant made for this work to the chairman of tho Lake Coleridge Hoad Board on production of the necessary certificates. A report was read from tho Resident Engineer of tho Malvern Water Race, and it was resolved that tenders be called for tho formation of twelve miles of the branch race in six contracts. The standing committed of tho Council on this work were authorised to accept tenders when received.
A deputation from the Avon Road Board waited on the Council, with reference to the grant made by the Council at its last meeting of £7OO for recreation grounds in the Avon district. They desired that, instead of the £7OO as voted, the Council should appropriate the whole of the money coming to the district, some £I2OO, for tho purpose. The deputation having retired, Mr Wilson gave notice of motion on the subject for next meeting. A deputation of land owners and others, residing near Kapitone Creek, waited on the Council with a view to having the creek cleared out. The deputation were informed that the creek in question was not under the control of the Council but of the Road Board of the district, but that the Council would draw the attention of the Road Board to tho necessity for some action being taken in the matter. The report of the inspector of slaughterhouses was read, and three new licenses were granted. Several accounts wore passed for payment, and the Council then adjourned.
