PARLIAMENTARY NEWS.
[By TbiiE&eaph.] [FEOir OT/B OWN COBBBSPONDBNT.] WELLINGTON, August 30. It was currently Btated in the lobbies this morning ' that Mr Vincent Pyke intended to take proceedings ogainßt the Sergeant-at-Arms for assault, in removing him from the gallery on Saturday morning. The suit would have been a friendly one so far aB it relates to the Sergeant-at-Arms, and was merely meant to test the power of the Speaker in ordering the removal of the member for the Dunstan while he was committing no disturbance. I have since learnt that Mr Pjke, acting upon legal advice, does not intend to proceed against the Sergeant-at-Arms, but prefers to let the matter rest whore it is. His conduct on Saturday morning is generally condemned, and was rather churlish, and the very inadequate apology made by him has not tended to improve his position. The House looked almost deserted to-day, so many members having left; indeed considerable difficulty and delay were experienced in getting a quorum. The usual waste of time, however, continues to the last, and even the formal necessary Government Bills have a fight to get through. I hear [that there is little or no chance of the prorogation taking place to-morrow, but. it may be regarded as certain to take place on Wednesday. Mr Tola intends to move as an amendment to the Representation Bill next year the following : —" So soon as the University of New Zealand has 200 graduates who have taken degrees not being ad eundem degrees, the university shall return one member to serve in tho House of Representatives. All graduates of the university, Fellows of the Senate, professors, and all public lecturers or leacliers and examiners of tho university and colleges or institutions affiliated to the university, shall be entitled to vote in person and by proxy at ths eleotion of such member. The registrar of the university shall be the returning officer in the election of the membsr. Erery election of a member for the university shall, except as hereinbefore contained, be conduotod, mutatis mutandis, in the manner prescribed by the law in force for the time being relative to the election of other members of the House of Representatives."
