LYTTELTON BOROUGH COUNCIL.
The Council met on Monday night. Present—Tbe Mayor (chairman), Cra. Macdonald, Beed, Grunb, Weyburn, Smith, Hawkins, Wood. The receipts since the previous meeting were £lO9 15s lOd. Mr P. Cunningham wrote asking that the town surveyor lay out the southern boundaries of town sections 291 to 300. The foreman of works brought in the plan of the town as recently surveyed by Mr Cuff, chowing the correct surveys of the lots in question. The plan did not appear to show that the seotiona encroached on the road as supposed by Mr Cunningham. The communication was left in the bands of the estates committee. Mr O. Baynolds wrote asking upon what terms the .Council's reserves at Sherwood would be rented. The Mayor said the reeervo was one of 1250 acres, and une'er the Municipal Corporation Amendment Act the Council had now power to let, by tender. The letter was left in the hands of the E-tates Committee to call for tenders. Messrs Cameron Bros, and Mr C. W. Turner, as requested, would be supplied with monthly accounts for water. Accounts tmouming to £l4l 12s 3d were pissed for payment. Mr Kent, the engineer at the pumping station, reported that the inspector of machinery had made his official visit and found everything satisfactory. It wsb decided that the reservoir should be cleared out the first opportunity. Or. Snith raised the question of the decision arrived at by the Council as to putting a urinal up in front of the school ground. Ha thought it a moat ursuitable place. JThe Mayor, Cra. Macdorjld, Wood and Grubb, spoke to the same effect. Ore. Hawkins and Macpheison took a similar view. Cr. Smith said the school committ.eo had unanimously decided against the proposal. The matter then dropped. Cr. Smith drew attention to the statement made that a reduction had been made in the wages of the employes of the Council, and asked whether it applied to all the permanent hands. Upon looking through the list it was found that the reduction made amounted iu the aggregate to something like £BO per annum, aud Cr. ?mith disagreed with the step tbat had been taken. He strongly opposed the action of the works committee, considering that the wages were low enough before. Cr. Hawkins regretted the matter had been brought up by Cr. Smith. Considerable discussion ensued upon the matter. Cr. Smith moved—" That the wages of tho regular hands be restored to tha former rates." Cr. Hawkins moved an amendment—" Tbat the action of the works committee in making the reductions they had be approved." Cr. Wood said the committee had lately a very severe task in dealing vrith this question. He himself had been applied to by men who expressed themselves anxious to take employment at 6a per day. Cr. B.ed seconded the motion and Cr. Macphereon the amendment. The amendment was carried by six votes to two. Cr. Maephcrson thought it, was important that considering the large number of Maoris collected at tbe gaol tit prr sent, an inquiry should be made whether the sanitary regulations were enforced. Cr. Beed said complaints were made by people in Diinpier's Bay of the dangercus practice of driving cattle along the road. It was agreed that a by-law prohibiting driving during certain hours, be passed. Notice of motion was given by Cr. Beed—- " That all persons regulurly employed by tha Council be paid 8s per day." The motion will come up at the wit meeting.
