[By Tblbobaph.] [Par s.a. Tararua via the Bluff.] VICTORIA. MELBOURNE, August 17. Political affairs have been quiet throughout the week, except in regard to the canvassing for ministers’ re-election. It is expected that the contests will prove very close, especially for Fitzroy, where Mr Yale is not popular. The opinion gains ground that the Beform question will be shelved for the present. Mr Vale, speaking at Fitzroy on Saturday, said that it would be impossible for the Ministry to consider the subject of Beform at first, while their attention was being devoted to the finanancial position. The question of the Chairmanship of Committees is unsettled. The names of Messrs Miracie and Gaunson are mentioned. The former will probably bo elected. A writ for another vacancy in the Council has been issued for the I6th. Mr Gumming finally retires, and Mr Connor, Mayor of Geelong, and Mr George Smith, of Ballarat, are candidates. It is stated that Sir James McCulloch intends to become a candidate for the Legislative Council.
Kelly was formally committed for the Beechworth Circuit Court for the 14th of October, on charges of murdering Lonegan and Soanlan. He has since been brought down and lodged in Melbourne gaol. Since bis return from Beechworth Kelly has been much depressed. He complained of a pain in his foot, but the bullet was extracted on Friday and since then he has felt relieved. Constable Mclntyre, the principal witness in the Kelly case, is suffering from pleurisy and has been obliged to go to the hospital. Sir Hercules Bobinson and family are booked by tho John Elder for tha 21st of September. The “Argus” says thatFolingsby’sportrait of Sir Hercules Bobinson is a speaking likeness and an artistic work. SYDNEY, August 17.
The French war ship Navarino has arrived from Now Caledonia with 380 convicts and 700 Government employees and soldiers. The number of liberes at Noumea is causing anxiety. Three chiefs had sent a friendly farewell letter to Governor Aubry, acknow-
ledging his justice towards them. A good feeling at present exists between the chiefs and the Government. New Caledonia advices state that Tahiti has been formally proclaimed a French possession. A notification has been given by King Pomare to the French authorities.
Mr Saul Samuel has been appointed A gent-General, and leaves in a month. Mr Sutton succeeds Mr Samuel. Sir Geo. Innes becomes Minister of Justice. SOUTH AUSTRALIA. ADELAIDE, August 17. On Friday an attempt was made to forcibly enter the Bank of Adelaide, at Morgan, but it was unsuccessful. Three men have been arrested on suspicion, QUEENSLAND. BRISBANE, August 17. The Budget statement was made on Thursday. The expenditure for the current year is put at £1,689,000. It is proposed to increase the land sales to £175,000. A duty of 2s per 100 ft. on cedar exported, and IJd on stearine imported is also proposed. These changes are expected to yield £28,000, leaving a surplus of £32,000.
