LOCAL INDUSTRIES COMMISSION.

The following letter has been received from the Hon. the Premier by the chairman of the Local Industries Commission :

“ Government Buildings, Wellington, “ N.Z., August 19th, 1880. “ Sir, —I beg leave, on behalf of the Government of New Zealand, to offer to yourself and to your colleagues upon the Commission appointed to enquire respecting the encourage ment of local industries their best thanks for the valuable report on the subject, which has now been presented to Parliament. “ 2. The Government appreciate the diffi culty which the Commissioners have had in dealing with the subject referred to them, on account of the limited time at their command, and the wide scope of the Commission; and the Government believe that the mode of action adopted by the Commissioners was the best possible under the circumstances. 11 3. The recommendations of the Commission will receive the careful consideraiion of the Government at the earliest moment at which the pressure of Parliamentary business will render this course possible. Amendments in the tariff will be proposed during the present session, but, with this exception, the Government do not anticipate being able to make any general proposal for giving effect immediately to those recommendations. They will, however, occupy the careful attention of the Government during the recess ; and I have no doubt that, both by the action which the report may assist the Government in taking, and by the information and valuable suggestions which it will convey to the public, it will be productive of great service to the colony. “4. I shall foel much obliged if you will communicate to your colleagues on the Commission this expression of the acknowledgment of their services.

“ I have the honor to be, sir, “ Your obedient servant, “ John Hall. “ Edward Wakefield, Esq., M.H.E., Chairman, &0., &o.”
