AMBERLEY TOWN HALL COMPANY LIMITED.

A meeting of the shareholders was held in the Town Hall, on Wednesday evening, to consider a proposition to build an additional room to the present building. The chairman of the company (Mr F. Courage) presided, and Messrs T. Douglas, Benn, Greig, Crampton, directors, were also present. The Chairman, in referring to the proposed new room, stated that the present hall was destitute of any appliances for warming it, and unless something were done the R.M. Court would certainly not continue its use, and a good tenant would bo lost. The Oddfellows also considered the big hall unsuitable for their meetings. The Oddfellows, in order to assist the company, offered the sum of £IOO on mortgage at 9 per cent., and would continu* the use of the hall for such time as the loa was for. There was also a suggestion that tho Bank of New Zealand would advance that sum on a promissory note. It would be for tho meeting to decide first if the addition as per plan kindly drawn out by Mr Greig should be proceeded with. Mr Greig stated that the proposed building would cost about £BO. Mr McLean was willing to sell the land required for £lO. A resolution approving of the erection of the addition was then put and carried. A discussion took place on the question of raising the money required. Mr Benn explained the advantage of getting the money from the Bank, and reducing the amount of the loan as rents, &a., accrued. Nearly £2OO had been paid off in that way during tho past two years. A question was asked as to whether, if the offer of the Oddfellows was not accepted, they were likely to build a hall of their own. Mr Simpson, as an Oddfellow, certainly could not tell, nor could any one else, what views the lodge might have. The Oddfellows were not seeking an investment, tho present offer being the result of a proposition made to tie order, and which he considered might be accepted to mutual advantage. Ultimately it was resolved to leave the financial arrangements to the directors. A meeting of directors to open tenders for the proposed new room was then held, and Mr T. Osborn’s tender, at £76, accepted.
