[PEBS3 ASSOCIATION.] AUCKLAND, August 12. A HuDgry Crew. The cutter Sovereign of the Seas, whioh was reported as in distress,' has arrived. The crew were four days without provisions. Charge cf RapeAlexander Smith, a lad aged nineteen, was charged with rape on a little girl of thirteen and committed for trial at the Police Court this morning. Dramatic Copyright. The Besident Magistrate gave a long judgment to-day for the non-suit of Mr Gillon in the claim against Mr LeLias for a dramatic copyright claim under the Copyright Act. He said the law was beset with such numberlesß legal difficulties as to make it apparently impossible to recover. The Besident Magistrate said the case should have been brought on in the Polica Court. WELLINGTON, August 12. Attempted Suicide. A man named James Brown was charged to-day, at the Magistrate's Court, Master ton, with attempting suicide by cutting his throat, and was remanded for eight days. The Governor's SonSir Hercules Bobinson's son is a passenger by H.M.S. Baleigh for Plymouth. WESTPOBT, August 12. Incline Railway. The alterations which were found necessary in the Colliery Company's incline railway were completed yesterday, and a truck of coal was lowered in presence of the shareholders and others. The incline works without a hitch, and the management is expected to be in full working order in a few days. DITNEDIN, August 12. Heavy Costs. The Compensation Court awarded the claimant in Alves v Corporation £1654 costs, making the total award £4254. The Otago Central Railway.
At a meeting last evening a resolution in favour of the construction of the Otago Central Bailway to Sutton was carried unanimously. An amendment which recommended that beyond the point mentioned in the motion the railway should not be extended, but that a metalled road to the interior should be formed, did not obtain a single vote beyond those of the movers. Messrs Stout, Fish, Shand, Bell, and Matheson were the principal speakers. INVEBOAEGILL, August 12 ~ Land and Property Taxes. Great surprise is expressed at the nonissue of the new returns under the property tax, as they are supposed to be sent in at the end of the present month. Several land tax defaulters, principally farmers, figured in the Court this morning. Mr B. B. Martin, Commissioner, stated that no less than seven separate notices had been served on each of them. AUCKLAND, August 11. Disastrous Gales. The schooner Amaranth experienced heavy weather on the coast. Off Cable-end Foreland the main boom carried away, and the patent log was lost. Next day the gale increased to a hurricane, and the -jib was blown to pieces. There were terriSc squalls at intervals and a heavy sea. At 2 p.m. a prodigious wave carried away the steering gear in two pieoes, and half filled the cabin and forecastle with water. The ship was hove to, and an anchor rigged to keep her head to ssa till the gale moderated. It is feared that the recent gales on the coast have played sad havoc among the smaller trading vessels. Several already are reported as missing, and accounts of pieces of wreckage being found are to hand. A quantity of sails and wreckage was seen inside Tukatu Point, between Little and Big Omaha. From this it is apparent that a vessel has been wrecked at that place. Fears are entertained for the safety of the Queen schooner, which left port last Sunday. A telegram received here from Coromandel from the captain of the Linda Weber, bn'gantine, states that on the voyage from Wangaroa to Napier, in the late gale on the 7th, she was thrown on her beam ends, and he had to cut away the foretopmaßt. He lost everything above the lower mast, and carried away the foreyard, boom, and most of the sails and gear. He also lost part of the deck load, and with difficulty reached Coromandel Harbor. Found Drowned. At the inquest on the body of Henry Boy ton, a verdict of "Found drowned" was returned. Drowned in the WaipaGeorge Barker, of Hamilton, a carpenter, aged 22 years, was drowned last night while crossing the Waipa river in a canoe. Obituary. The Bev. O. H. Schnaokenberg, Wesleyan missionary at Baglan, died on the passage to Auckland. He had been in the mission work for thirty-five years, and was a native of Germany. Bay of Islands Coal CoAt the half-yearly meeting of the Bay of Islands Coal Company, the report showed that the sales of coal were 25,277 tons for the half-year, an increase of 1000 tons. A dividend of 7i per cent, on the capital is declared, and £1069 carried to reserve. NAPIER, August 11. A Provident Board. The Education Board will not have to make a reduction in their expenditure in consequence of the reduction of the grant for salaries, &c. These will continue to be paid as heretofore, the Board having so husbanded its resources that it has £3OOO invested on fixed deposits. A Mistake SomewhereThe railway line from Kopua to Makatako, which Mr Oliver in his Public Works Statement says will be gone on with during the year, has been finished three months, and trains run regularly to Makatako. WANGANUI, August 11. Strike among the TailorsThe hands employed in the local tailoring establishments resist the proposed reduction, approaching 20 per cent., and have struck. WELLINGTON, August 11. Funeral of Mr Hunter. The funeral of the late Mr George Hunter took place this afternoon, and was largely attended. The principal places of business were closed, and the shipping displayed their
bunting half -msnt high as a mark of respect to the memory of the deceased. H.M.S. Baleigh. H.M.S. Baleigh leave* for Plymouth v» Falkland Islands and St. Helena, late this evening, or at daylight to-morrow. TIMABTJ, August 11. AccidentThe railway stationmaster at Makiiihi met with a nasty acoident to-doy. He was standing at the door of the goods shed and a truck collided with the door, which flow back on him, striking him down in an unconscious state. By last accounts he was progressing favorably. DTJNEDIN, August 11. Mining Item. O'Brien's party struck a payable reef of gold on a deep lead on the Waipori flat on. Saturday. A number of claims, of an aggregate area of 33 acres, have been taken up.
