[eeutee’s telegeams.] MELBOURNE, Angast 10. Mr Berry’s Latest ViewsMr Berry addressed his constituents at Geelong last night. He said he would strictly-adhere to his latest views on the reform question, and would introduce a Bill to abolish plural voting at elections. He proposed to meet the existing deficit by retrenchment, including 20 per cent, deductions in the salaries of Ministers, future Governors, Judges, and Civil servants. The police department will be reorganised. The existing deficiency is £648,000, including selectors’ rents, £502,000, leaving an actual deficit of £146,000, which would be further reduced by the readjustment of accounts. Only a moderate increase of taxation would be necessary. ElectoralThe Ministers being opposed in reelection are Messrs Berry, Yale, Williams and Richardson. Libel Action. The libel action against “ Punch ” has been settled. Direct to Lyttelton. . The steamship Durham will go direct to Lyttelton on her next trip from England. MELBOURNE, August 11. M. Sondry. M. Soudry, the French Commissioner, who was wounded at the Opera House, is a passenger for Europe by the Garonne. ADELAIDE, August 11. Financial Statement. The Treasurer made his financial statement in the Legislative Assembly last night. He showed the revenue for the past financial year amounted to £1,831,000, being £245,000 below that estimated, and leaving a debit balance of £243,000, exclusive of £30,000 appearing on the supplementary estimates. He estimated the deficit for the present year at £175,000, which will be covered by new taxes. The latter, however, will be deferred, in view of the elections, which will shortly take place. Tlie Tasmanian Parliament was opened yesterday by the Acting-Governor) who, in his speech on the occasion, announced what measures would ha prepared for the increase of taxation, with a view to augment the revenue.
