Tbbess association.] NAPIER, Auguat 5. A Farce. The prisoner Hewson, who, last criminal sessions, was sentenced to two years and twenty-five lashes, received his flagging yesterday. The operation was performed privately, and the general impression is that the whipping was a farce. The man who wielded the cat was allowed to disguise himself by blacking his face, and it is thought that the whole thing was carried out to the satisfaction of the prisoner. Gas Company. A landslip on the face of one of the hills closely abutting on the Picton Harbor has revealed a 14ft soam of good marketable brown coal, which, when tested, proved of fair steaming qualities. DUNEDTN, August 4. Dreadful TragedyA fearful tragedy occurred last night at Kyeburn diggings. Mrs Young, a highlyrfcspectod elderly widow, living alone, but with Chinese miners in the proximity, was found brutally maltreated, and died this afternoon. She was conscious for a few minutes only. Great dif trees is felt throughout the district. Eobbery appears to be the motive, as the contentt of the deceased's purse were taken, together with her watch and trinkets.
