CHURCH WORK SOCIETY.

The first of a series of entertainments in connection with the Church Work Society took place at Avonside schoolroom on Friday evening, the 30th of July. The programme consisted of instrumental and vocal music, and a Shakesperian reading by Dr. Ellis. Messrs Acland, Nioholls, Wardrop, Izard, and Tarleton were amongst the gentlemen soloists, and solos and concerted nieces were given by Mesdames Maskell, Palairet, Fletcher, and the Misses Taylor and Fairhurst. The ladies who presided at the piano were Mesdames Ellis and Wansey. The proceeds of the concert, which was very successful, were devoted to defraying the expenses of the gas which has been recently laid on to the schoolroom. It is proposed to hold the second of these concerts at an early date.
