WELLINGTON, August 3. An Unpleasant Husband. The man Vause, who was arrested yesterday for threatening to shoot his wife, was charged at the Magistrate’s Court this morning with lunacy. He had admitted that the action was due to excessive drinking. He was remanded until Thursday for medical examination. AUCKLAND, August 2, Timber Company. At the annual meeting of the Auckland Timber Company a dividend of 10 per cent, was declared. Acclimatisation Society. At a meeting of the Acclimatisation Society it was stated that there were £341 to the credit of the society. Wreck of a Cutter. The cutter Fanny has been wrecked at Kawau. No Uvea were lost. NAPIER, August 2. FireBy a fire this evening, the dwelling-house of Mr Edmund Sutton, of the firm of Wardrop and Co., was completely destroyed. The damage is estimated at £3OOO, and the insurances are £SOO in the Imperial on the building, and £3OO in the Now Zealand on the furniture. The origin of the fire is unknown. The only parsons in the house at the time were four children, the eldest being thirteen years old. All were saved, though one had a narrow escape, having to be dragged from under a bed, where he had crouched. WELLINGTON, August 2. Threatening to Shoot a WifeA man named Vause, a saddler, was arrested this afternoon on the charge of threatening to shoot his wife. On being searched forty-four bullets were found on him, and concealed in the back portion of the outer case of his watch was a smaU packet of strychnine. Statistics. One hundred and fifteen births, thirty-one deaths, and twenty-three marriages were registered during July. Customs Revenue. The Customs revenue for the month amounted to £12,453 3s lOd, showing a decrease of £3503 on the corresponding month last year. NELSON, August 2. Hew Catholic Church. At a meeting of St. Mary’s Catholic Church congregation last night, to consider the desirability of enlarging the edifice, it was agreed to build a new church, to cost about £2OOO. The sum of £6OO was immediately subscribed in the room, and £9OO is now available for the purpose. BALOLUTHA, August 2. Burglary. Messrs McKenzie, Thompson and Co.’s store was broken into between Saturday night and Sunday morning. The burglar gained admittance by removing the glass and frame of a back window. The desk was found to have been searched, and the lock of the safe had also been tried without effect. Nothing was missing out of the store. DUNEDIN, August 2. Breach of Registration Act. For a breach of the Registration Act in refusing to certify as to the cause of death of a patient, Dr. Borrows was fined a nominal penalty. Death of Mr Stevens. Mr Stevens, formerly chief officer on board the s.s. Wakatipn, who was severely injured some time ago on board that vessel whilst she was at Sydney, died at his residence hero today from the effects of the injuries then received.
