THE ENGLISH MARKETS.
The following is Messrs Miles Beos. ash Co.'s Colonial Produce Beport, dated London, June 17th : WOOL. The second series of Colonial wool sales for the year terminated on the Bth inst.; prices towards the close fell to about the level of early February rates, and the market left off weak. The demand throughout the sales has to a great extent been confined to middle-class wools, very superfine Australian having been rather neglected. The total quantity catalogued amounted to 382,000 bales, of which 20,t-00 bales were taken for export, and about 25,000 hales remain over for next sales to commence on the 17th August. Since the sales closed business in the North has asumed a quieter aspect, although mann--1 facturers are doing a pretty steady trade, and ' should orders for goods not fall off, we may in i a week or two look for more demand for wool, but at present so soon after our late large sales enquiry is naturally very limited. The f rest arrivals for August are— Bales. New South Wales and Queensland 70,606 Victoria 31,766 South Australia 11,180 Western Australia 236 Tasmania ... ... ... 8,717 New Zealand 63,768 Cape 37,286 i ——— Total 228,553 ( WHEAT AND FLOTJB. f Business in onr wheit market has been rather ' dull during the past fortnight, hut prices have not altered materially. Stocks in England (London especially) are remarkably small; nevertheless, millers and dealers are not inclined i to speculate to any considerable extent, as the present prospects for the harvests, both in America and Europe, are so favorable. In Australian wheat cargoes on passage have sold February b.f.d. 50s 9d, March b.f.d. 49s to 49s 6d, and April b.f.d. 48a 6d, and for arrivals at port of call, from Port Pirie. sale 3 have been effected at from 535. down to 50s 6d. In New Zealand wheat the Hereford, with 7575 quarters, and Pleiades with 5974 quarters, have arrived ■ from Lyttelton, for which the value is about 48s per quarter; prompt shipments to London are worth about 42s c.f. and i. We quote on spot— Australian wheat, 51s to 525; and New Zealand, 47b to s n s per 4961 b. Australian flour, 35s to 375; and New Zealand, 33s to 355. TAXLOW AND BIDES. The tallow market has been flat, and Bussian has declined. There has been a moderate demaud for Australian tallow, the sales during the past fortnight having comprised 2100 casks, but prices have declined 6d to 9d, the value to-day of good to fine mutton being 33s 6d to 34s 9d, and fair to fine beef tallow 31s 6d to 32s 6d per cwt. The arrivals have been rather large, and the stock now in first hands is about 10,000 casks. Hides are dull of sale, without material change on late prices, but the tendency is downwards. PBESEEVED MEATS. There has been a fair demand for most tinned meats, although compressed beef has attracted most attention. The importations of fresh meats from America have been heavy, but prices have not varied much. Bank rate, 3 per cent.
