[PROM OHR OWN CORRESPONDENT.] WELLINGTON, July 30,
The House at last is beginning to make some progress. About twenty unopposed Bills got through their second readings at the morning’s sitting, thus materially relieving the Order Paper, on which last night ninetythree Bills were entered, including fifty-five for second readings. This evening, also, the last page but one of the estimates was reached, and hopes are entertained that they will be got through before the House rises to-night. It is understood that Ways and Means will not he gone on with till the Public Works Statement has been brought down, so that the whole requirement for all purposes may bo before the House before the Revenue proposals are discussed. It is now regarded as certain thjt the Public Works statement will be delivered on Tuesday next, and the Public Works estimates will be dealt with as speedily as possible thereafter. By adopting this course, the amount actually to bo expended during the financial year will be definitely ascertained. There has been a great dearth of political gossip this week. It was expected that the two Royal Commission reports, viz., Local Industries and Native, No. 3, would afford pabulum, but these hopes proved vain, as the former, although promised for last Monday, is certain not to be in before Monday next, and probably later. There is no fresh news of importance to day as to Native matters. The new Maori Prisoners Detention Bill got through very easily.
