A two-roomed cottage in Molesworth street was burnt down last night at shout eleven o’clock. "It was owned by Alex. Boswell, and insured for £75 in the Standard, This is the first house that has been destroyed by fire in New Plymouth for ten years. The Political Fencers. Twelve Natives were brought in last night from the front. It is reported that Te Whiti is going to send one hundred Natives to fence the land, and thus challenge the Constabulary to a large fight. NEW PLYMOUTH, July 27, Native Whara BurntAbout eleven o’clock last night a Native whare at Bell Block, occupied by an old Maori man and woman, was burnt. The inmates were asleep, and before the man could be got out he was severely burnt all over his body. He was brought into the hospital, and is not expected to live. More Native PrisonersOwing to the inclemency of the weather yesterday, the Natives were not sent into town, but this morning two conveyances left town for the Werekino camp, where the prisoners were sent yesterday. Four other Natives were arrested this morning at the camp, and will he brought into town in company with those previously taken. There are twelve prisoners now in custody, and others are expected to he taken to-morrow. WELLINGTON, July 27. The Barque Malay. A preliminary enquiry was held to-day relative to the barque Malay striking a rock off the entrance to the heads. The captain and chief officer were examined. Their evidence attributed the accident to a sudden shift of wind when the vessel was going about. GRBYMOUTH, July 27. Fire. A fire occurred this morning, between two and three o’clock, on the premises recently occupied by Mr T. W. Hungerford, Mawhera quay, and which has been taken possession of by the Government. Fortunately no person was on the premises at the time, and by the exertions of the Fire Brigade the fire was confined to the building in which it originated. The origin of the fire is a mystery. This makes the second mysterious fire within three days. DUNEDIN, July 27. Suicide of a Chinaman. On the Beautiful Star’s passage from Oamaru last night a Chinaman jumped overboard. A boat was immediately lowered, but he sank before the spot was reached. Mr Simpson. A movement is on foot to retain Mr Simpson’s services as magistrate in this district. Coroner’s Verdict. The jury at the inquest on Williamson returned a verdict of “Accidental death,” a rider being added that they were of opinion that sleepers should not be conveyed on engines, but stowed away in trucks. Sunday WorkMr Oliver, replying to a memorial complaining of Sunday work on the railways in running goods trains and ballasting, says he is as anxious as the memorialists to discontinue work on Sundays, and has given immediate instructions accordingly. BLUFF, July 27. Washed Overboard. During the passage of the Annie Hill from Grey mouth. Captain McKay was washed overboard. I hear on good authority that Sir Hercules Robinson intends making Wellington the headquarters of his new racing stud instead of Christchurch, as reported same time ago. Boxes for six horses are now in course ef construction at MoNab’s garden at the Hutt, and in a few days will receive their tenants. These will comprise two fillies expected from Sydney by the Wnkatipu, two colls from the North, and two others which his Excellency has purchased from Mr Finlay, his son-in-law, a well-known sporting man in New South Wales. Wellington sporting men are very exultant over the Governor’s decision, and are sanguine of making Wellington races the best in the colony.
