GOLDMINING AT GREY MOUTH
WELLINGTON, July 24. The following telegram, received to-day by the Under-Secretary for Goldflelds, has been courteously placed at my disposal by the Government, It gives official information of encouraging report* as to the large finds of gold near Greymouth. The telegram is from Mr Warden Maokay, and runs as follows : " Greymouth, 23rd July. In reply to your telegram of the 21st inst., re find of gold at Seventeen mile Beaob, I have ascertained beyond doubt that one party of four men obtained 2480 z. 2dwt. 4 grains in sixteen working days. Some other parties have made £7, £B, and £9 sterling per week. There are about sixty claims on the goldfielsl, more or less payable. The male mining population north of the Grey from Oobden to Razorback is about 370 j about 290 of these are at the Seventeen-mile Beach on the sixty claims before-mentioned. By the courtesy of the Bank managers here I am enabled to state that since the Ist of March last they have purchased about 3100 oz of gold, which they know came from the Seventeen Mile Beach, besides other parcels whioh may have come from there. The above quantity was principally from the special buyers for each bank, and it_ must be borne in mind that during that period, commencing Ist March, preliminary and nonproductive works occupied a considerable time, in faot some claims are still tunnelling, &?., and not paying anything yet, although prospecting has proved them auriferous."
