KAIAPOI BOROUGH COUNCIL
The fortnightly meeting of thislOonnoil was held on Tuesday evening. Present—the Mayor (Mr Blackwell, Ors. Moore, Fraser, Pinching, Woodford, Mathews, and May. The Mayor announced that a refund of £lO4, deducted in error from the Council’s subsidy for charitable aid had been refunded by the present Government. Letters were read— From the Colonial Secretary, asking for returns of persons receiving indoor or outdoor relief, stating the nationality of each, and whether relieved by the Government or the local body. From Messrs Saunders, Bros., Ashburton, asking if they did the ploughing for plantations would the Council allow cost of same in rent. It was decided to defer this question this season. From an applicant for relief, aged seventy-five, asking the Council to advocate her cause with the Charitable Aid Board. It was agreed to do so, the Mayor pointing out that it was a very pitiful ease. The works committee reported that the 18-in. pipes for junction of Beswick and Charles streets would cost £62, labor £9 10?, and floodgate £2 10s. The 80 yards of 9-inch pipes taken up would be worth £2O 6s Bd. The contractor for metal had delivered the quantity ordered. The footpath in Akaroa street had been gravelled, as well as other paths in the town. A shed had been erected at the pound, costing £ll, and the bridgekeeper’s house had been painted and papered by order of the Board of Health. On the motion of Or. Moore, seconded by Or. May, the 18in. pipes were ordered to be put in by day labor, and the joints set with cement. The rest of the report was also adopted. Or. Fraser, chairman of the finance committee, reported tbo receipts for the fortnight to be—Bates, £l6 15s 6d; refund from Government, £104; present balance in bank, £440 2s lOd. The Mayor said of this amount £l3O belonged to , another account. Accounts, £73 14s lid, I were passed. Mr Pamham attended in reference to the Beach road drain agreement. After some discussion, during which the anginal proposal was read, which made no reference to keeping the floodgate in repair, it was decided that an agreement be drawn up by the clerk and signed, an amendment that a legal agreement be drawn np s>jr Mr Joynt being lost. It was da- ' ended that the clerk take levels of the drain from Worth road to floodgate on Mr D. - Honey's land, and the works committee give 1 an estimate for repairing floodgate. Ors. « Fraser, Woodford, and Mathews voted against I
the motion. Or. Pinching drew attention to a case for charitable aid, in which medical comforts were required. It was decided to refer the same to tho Charitable Aid Board. In reply to Or. Woodford, the chairman of works committee said that the removal of gorge overgrowing back streets had been carried out. In reply to Or. Fraser, the clerk stated that £4O was owing for rates. It was decided to mate a drain near Mr Alexander’s house, across Haven quay. On the motion of Or. Moore, it was resovod—“That tho lighting committee should report on the lighting of the town and he gave notice to move—- “ That the minute authorising the placing of a lamp at corner of Charles and Jones street be rescinded.” The Council then adjourned.
