KAIAPOI PLOUGHING MATCH.

Committee— Messrs T. Pashby (chairman). J. "Wail*, W. McGregor. C. Young, J. Steveneon, W. M. Boss, ,J. Beharrell. B. Parnham, J. Lowthiou Wilson and E. Coup, honorary secretaries. The twenty-second annual ploughing match ander tho auspices of the Kaiapoi Farmers’ Club took place on Wednesday, in a paddock kindly pieced at the disposal of the committee by Mr Edwin Parnham, on the Ohoka road. Tho weather, though chilly and subject to passing showers, was certainly characteristic of recent matches. There was a larger attendance of tho public than last year, and in tho work of the champion class the keenest interest was manifested. While tho award was in good order for cutting, and the land of tho beat kind for operations, its lumpy nature in parts rendered the task of the ploughmen no easy one to keep the work all good alike. A start was made at 10.30, and by 4 30 tho teams, except in one instance, had finished. The usual conditions in force at tho previous Kaiapoi matches, and nhioh have been generally adopted at other places, wore observed. The quantity of land ploughed was half an acre for single, and three-quarters of an acre for double ploughs. The work waa to be not less than five inches deep, each ploughman commencing on the left of his ground, going four times round his fiering and scattering tho remainder, making one finish. A substantial lunch was provided by tho owner of the paddock for the men, and the committee and judges dined together in a tent ■ connected with a booth held by Mr Piper, of the Kaikanui Hotel. The active members of the -committee may fairly be complimented on the discharge of their duties, and the chairman ■and secretary deserved special commendation for the success of the whole affair. The quality of the ploughing as a whole was up to the average of previous years. There were several capital teams, the most noticeable of which were Mr Walls’ pair of four-year-old mares by Sir Walter Scott, and Mr Pashby’s team of mares. The following are the entries, remarks, and awards: Champion Class. Ploughmen. Owners. District. Plough. •8. C. Hack C. Hack Papanui Dancan W. Bnshy T. Pashby Kaiapoi I. Keetley j. Hott W. Judsou Woodend Ballarat J. McGowan W. Wiley Sefton . Watson I*. Walls J. Walls Kaiapoi I. Sellars A Ladbrook Badbrook Templeton Dunoon J. Dixon J. Dixon Ashley Blyth G. Higham G. Higham Papanui Blyth • Absent. The competition between Busby, Dixon, XAdbrook, and Nott in this class was very close, and speculation waa very rife as to the result, the majority being in favor of tho firstnamed, who had decidedly the best fiering, aquarest work, well packed, readable furrows, find good finish ; Nott failed in his line, and his furrows showed too much width on one aido; McQ-owan set up a high fiering and a trifle confined, made substantial work, but rather misjudged his finish; Walls had an unequal fioriug, strong work, with a fair comb and close ; Dadbrook made a neat fiering, not quite so good as Busby’s, his furrows wore smaller, and his finish stood in aa a recommendation to his work ; Dixon set hie work up well, with a sharp angle, and his finish was deep; Higham’s performance was abort of what he can do, in places left rather open and flat. Wheel Class. Ploughmen, Owners. District. Plough, £*. Bowron Mrs Birnie Kaiapoi I. Keetley T. Hanna M. Hanna Sefton Duncan C. Barnes Elder Bros. Ejreton Keetley J. Palmer Mrs Buckley Kaiapoi Keetley W. Mock G. Edwards Okair Keetley A. Scott J. Walls Kaiapoi I. Sellars Nene of the work in this class was up to the standard of two years ago. Bowron made a mess of his line ; though his furrow slice was good, it did not lay well. Hanna, for a youngster, did remarkably well; his land was capitally packed, but his finish being too wide would probably bring him to second place, Barnes’ work was spoiled by the furrow horse to a great extent. Palmer’s fiering was spoilt by the metal in his team, and his work was done too quickly to be done well; Mock made a heavy fiering, and his furrows lacked pack. Scott certainly put up the best ridge in this class, it was nat quite straight, but solid and good. DOUBLE FURROW. Plonghman. Owner. District. Plough. W. DoSell W. Dailell Plaxton Dancan •H. Hack E. Hack Eiccarton Duncan H. Storer W. hi. Boss Kaiapoi I. Keetley C. E. Sfcevington C. Skevington Waikuku Keetley T. Davis J. Davis “ Eyreton Hornsby 'Absent. Duffell ploughed light, and as a consequence the furrow sank under pressure. Storer put . up a very solid ridge in a workmanlike manner. Skevington was very little behind, but it was thought by the judges to be open in places, and the finish wanting in strength. Davis gave up early in tho day, being unable to get bia implement into good going. Bovs Under Eighteen. Ploughman. Owner. District. Plough. TP. Skevington C. Skevington Waiknku Hornsby T. Belcher E. Belcher Kaiapoi I. Keetley 55. hlorriss W. Merries Waikuku Hornsby (This trio deserved every credit for their work, Belcher’s waa decidedly the best, and Skevington was but a little behind, Morris mode a fair performance. The judges were— Champion and Boys’ Classes—Messrs. J. Sharp, Lincoln; TV. Plaskett, Femaide ; and J. Bruce, Weedon. Wheel and Double-furrow Class—Messrs. A. Garland, Cnst; G.
