Mr Whitaker to-day suggested the postponement of Mr Sheehan’s motion for the House to consider the report of the West Coast Commission, in order to have a day fixed next week specially for the purpose. The suggestion was objected to, and the motion could not bo put, but I believe that Government are anxious to give Mr Sheehan fair play in this matter, and will themselves next week give up the Government day for the purpose. The West Coast Commission intend to bring down their third and final report on Monday next, containing recommendations relative to the whole subject, and this is the reason why Mr Sheehan was anxious not to go into bis defence and other questions regarding the Native administration by the late Government. The Public Entertainments Prohibition Bill, introduced by Mr Dick, is not yet circulated, but will be founded on the model of the Victorian Act, and gives the Colonial Secretary power to prohibit any entertainment which may appear to him to be indecent, immoral, or profane, and likely to provoke a breach of the peace or to be dangerous to life or limb.
