[mass association. ) WELLINGTON, July 22. . Police Court. Tho charge of a disgusting nature against Herman Mumm, a seaman on board the Stella, was heard at tho Police Court to-day. The accused was committed for trial. Gleich’s Rings. The diamond rings seized by the police from tho Adelaide bankrupt Gleich, and recently ordered by tho Supreme Court to bo returned, were offered for sale by auction. Previously to the sale the Collector of Customs intimated that the rings were not duty-paid, and the proceeds would have to be forfeited. The sale proceeded, and an amount of nearly £l5O will be paid to the Customs. RacingThe Wakatipu, which left for Sydney this afternoon, will, on her return trip, bring down two race horses, viz.—Lady Emma and Gitana —which have been purchased by Sir Hercules Robinson from Mr Lamond, DUNEDIN, July 22. Death of a Maori PrisonerOne of tho Maori prisoners from Taranaki, named Watson, died this morning from consumption. He had been ailing before admission. The Licensing Bill A sparsely attended meeting of the Temperance Alliance have carried resolutions
approving of the Licensing Bill, the restriction of a Sunday supply to honafidc traveller*, only recommending that the licensing and police supervision of club* should be the same as over ordinary public houses, and regretting the absence of the right of popular veto from the local option clause, A meeting of brewers have adopted » petition to Parliament protesting against clause 23 of the Licensing Bill. FireA fire broke out at 4.23 this morning in a two-storied brick building in Great King street, owned by George Mnnro, and occupied in the lower storey by T. Stewart, wood turner, and in the upper portion by A. and T. Inglia. The fire broke out ia the lower portion of the building. The whole of the interior was destroyed. The building was a new one, and was insured in the Norwich Union for £3OO. Stewart was also insured. Cannot Agree. The jury ia the case of Mackenzie r Smith have been out four hours, and are unable to agree. AUCKLAND, July 21. The Three Brothers. A quantity of firewood, supposed to bo part of the cargo of the missing cutter Throe Brothers, was passed by a vessel bound for Tararua. in the Friendly Islands. A handsome yacht, built to the order of achief of the Friendly Islands, was launched to-day from Mr H. Nicols’ yard. She registers thirty-three tons, and has been named the Motu Lalla. Industrial Home Enquiry. The Industrial Horpo enquiry was continued to-day, when the evidence of McDonald, formerly an inmate of the Home, and that of Stuokley, the master of the Home, wore taken. It came out in the master’s evidence that Mr Sheehan and Dr. Pollen had given parents orders for the release of the childrenMr Habens remarked that neither of these gentlemen hold, or ever held, power to grant an order for the release of children, and that a release before the expiry of their term could only be effected by warrant under the hand of the Governor. The Society of ArtistsAttempts are being made to re-establish the Society of Artists. NAPIER, July 21. Hative Affairs. The Mount Vernon affair is assuming s serious aspect, owing to the refusal of the Government to grant the sheriff power to employ force to carry out his writ of ejectment. This morning a tenant of Mr Harding went out to plough on his land, which Harding has occupied for twenty years without his title being disputed, when a strong body of Maoris came up and forced him to stop ploughing. The land is more than half-a-mile from the disputed boundary, but the Natives now say that they will have all the land down to the railway. EducationalThe Education Board has passed a resolution asking the Government to amend the Education Act, so as to place in the hands of the Boards, instead of committees, the power cf enforcing the compulsory clause of the Act. NEW PLYMOUTH, July 2L The Parihaka MeetingThe Parihaka meeting passed off with the usual quietness. The Natives who have returned are reticent respecting Te Whiti’s counsel. Some say that they are determined to continue the fencing notwithstanding the arrests which have been made, and that they have no fear of the Government as Te Whiti will protect them. WELLINGTON, July 21. Obituary. The Rev. Father O’Reilly died to day, aged 72. He was one of the first priests in New Zealand, and was greatly respected by all classes. HOKITIKA, July 21. Mining’ Hews. Twenty diggers left by the Wallace for Okarito to-night. The news from Mapourika is favourable and several miners have gone overland. Thera are general indications of a great improvement in mining prospects south of Hokitika. The Waipara leaves for the same port on Friday.
