Twice RejectedMr McLaren, who was appointed by Mr Gladstone to the position of Lord Advocate of Scotland in his administration, and was rejected for Edinburgh in seeking re election on his acceptance of office, has contested the vacant seat for Derrick, and been again defeated. The Australian Eleven. The cricket match Australia v. Eighteen of the Crystal Palace Club was continued to-day on the Palace grounds. The Home team wont in for their first innings and were all out for 59 runs. Being 96 runs behind the Australians they followed their innings, and were disposed of for 97 runs. When the stumps were drawn for the day, the Australians had lost no wickets for 4 runs. A capital wicket was pitched, and the ground was in good order. The fielding of the Australian team was excellent throughout. July 21. Obituary. The death of the Earl of Dalhousio, aged 74, is announced to-day. The MarketsThree per Cent. Consols, 98 j. Brandy 10s 6d. The Germans in Turkey. In the House of Commons the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, in replying to a question, said that the German Government had in no way encouraged German officials to go to Turkey to take part in that country’s finances, but had cordially proposed to co-operate in concert with the other European Powers in that direction. Irish Distress. The Bill introduced by Government to authorise further advances for the mitigation of the distress in Ireland has passed both Houses of Parliament. CALCUTTA, July 21. Afghan Affairs. News has been received from Cabul that, acting under the advice of the Indian Governmen, a number of the most prominent adherents of Takoob Khan have conaanted to accept Abdurrahman Khan as the new Ameer of Afghanistan. VIENNA, July 21. South Eastern Europe. It is announced that the Austrian Government has informed the Porto that it is determined that the decisions of the European Conference recently held at Berlin, and the provisions of the Treaty of Berlin of 187 S, so far as they relate to Montenegro, shall be executed in their entirety. The Austrian Government further informs the Porte that it will urge the strict execution of the decisions of the Conference and the Treaty by all concerned.
