[PBESS ASSOCIATION. ( AUCKLAND, July 21. The Escaped Prisoner. The prisoner Whittle, who escaped from the gaol, at first mads for the Waihukerei ranges, but subsequently doubled back towards town. He was apprehended last night at Otahuhu, by Detective Brennan, who ascertained that hia sister and his mother-in-law resided in the village. After patiently waiting, the man turned up and was marched back to Auckland, There will bo an enquiry into the escape. No Appearance. The case of tho Bank of New South Wales T. the Royal Insurance Company, being a claim for tho insurance of property of which the complainants are mortgagees, which was to have been tried to-day, did not come on, owing to the parties having forgotten to notify the Judge, who did not come into town. WELLINGTON, July 21. Supreme and Police CourtsThe Native will case still occupies the Supremo Court. At the Police Court, John Palmer, of Oamaru, for attempting suicide, was discharged. Endeavors are to be made to obtain employment for him. DUNEDIN July 21. FiresThompson’s store, in Forth street, was destroyed by fire at eleven last night. The origin of tho fire is unknown. Tho building was insured for £2OO in the Norwich Union and tho stock for £4OO in the South British. At two this morning a two-storied building, formerly known as the Auld Scotland Hotel, was burned down. The insurances wore : on the building, in the National, £SOO, reinsured as follows—Transatlantic, Norwich, Union, Victoria, and South British, £IOO each ; on the stock £l5O, and on the furniture £350, in the Royal. INVERCARGILL, July 21. Civil Service Reductions. A meeting of railway employees appointed a deputation to wait on tho heads of departments regarding the proposed reductions in tho civil service. EscapeA prisoner named Whittle escaped from the Mount Eden Stockade yesterday and has not yet been captured. WELLINGTON, July 20. Verdict of IncendiarismAt the inquest at Carterton on Driscoll’s fire, a verdict of incendiarism was returned. There was no evidence to fix the guilt on any particular person. Plucky Rescue. A swagger had very narrow escape from being drowned in the Opihi river this afternoon. Savings Bank Deposits. The savings bank deposits for the quarter ended 30th June Jlast show an increase of £20,000 over the withdrawals. For a long time previously the withdrawals had exceeded the deposits. The 10 per-cent Reduction. Mr Richardson has given notice of a question for Thursday, whether the Government intend to put in force the 10 per cent, reduction to railway employes before the House has had an opportunity of considering the public works policy. An Tlnelaborate Return. Some time ago Mr Andrews called for a classified return relating to the number of registered clubs in the colony. To day the return was presented and it contains only the name of the Wellington Working Men’s Club.
