BENEVOLENT SOCIETY.

A meeting of tlie committee was held at 2 p.m. yesterday. Present His Worship the Mayor of Christchurch (in the chair), the Mayor of Sydenham, Messrs. Hawtes, Pratt, and J. Ollivier. A letter was read from Eev. Mr Davidson, pointing out that evil effects might follow from the copper used not being tinned. Mr Hawkes said ho had made inquiries, and found that the soup was made in an iron boiler and that all the copper was used for was to boil the soup during the day, and that it was scrubbed out every night. It was resolved to forward a letter to Mr Davidson thanking him for his suggestion, and informing him of the result of the inquiries of the committee on the subject. The caretaker reported as follows : —“ I have to report the donations received from the 10th to 17th July as follows : —Mr C. B. Taylor, 2cwt. flour, 501 b. oatmeal ; A Friend, half bag onions ; Mr E. Burns, quantity of muffins and cakes ; Messrs. Hall and Cousins, Culliiord, Green, and Bose* warne have supplied sufficient meat for soup requirements. Accounts to the amount of £74 Os 9d have been received during the week. The following goods have been received during the week:—Messrs. Edwards, Bennett and Co., 28 pairs blankets; Ballantyne and Co., 96 yards of flannel. From the 10th to 17th. July the amount of relief given has been as follows : —36 bags coal, 16 bags potatoes, 68 yards flannel, 9 pairs blankets, 221 b. oatmeal, 61b. rice, 361 b. sago, 1 pair of boots, 5 single blankets, 1 flannel petticoat, quantity of clothing, 22 gallons of soup daily. During the past week 38 cases have been relieved as follows, viz., first relief, 19 ; second relief, 24; third relief, 10; fourth relief, 2.” The report of the caretaker was read seriatim and adopted. The Mayor reported that the balance at the Bank to credit was £204 5s 7d. Accounts to the amount of £9l lls 2d were passed for payment. The committee after disposing of several cases adjourned.
