RANGIORA BOROUGH COUNCIL.
The usual monthly meeting of this Council was held on Friday evening. Present —His Worship tho Mayor, Ors. Johnston, Boyd, G-ood, Stephens, Ivory, Burt, and Ellis. Apology for absence of Or. Luxton was accepted. Or. White made his declaration as a aewly elected Councillor before the Mayor took bis seat. Letters were received and considered from a number of ratepayers re Albert street, which it was decided to temporarily repair, and at a future date to carry out all necessary work. Prom Mr R. Atkinson, showing it was necessary for the carrying away of storm water to clear the ditch on the north side of John street, and offering to do the work satisfactorily at Is fid per chain. Ordered that the works committee report at next meeting. From the Colonial Secretary, calling for a return of expenditure upon charitable aid to March 31st, 18S0, and from the administrator of charitable aid, Christchurch, anent the same subject. From Mr O. G. Chapman, returning officer, notifying the return of Mr W. White to fill the seat vacated by Cr. Robinson. From Mr Eber Watkins, asking for employment under his trying circumstances. Ota. Johnson and Burt agreed to give him work for a few days, the works committee then to deal with the case. From tho Union Bank re Government voucher, From the Secretary of the Rangiora Volunteer Fire Brigade, with copy of annual financial statement from Mr J. W. Heath, poundkeeper, forwarding quarterly return. The town clerk was instructed to supply a new pound book. Cr. Boyd proposed that the question of retaining the borough horse and cart be considered at the next meeting. Cr, White seconded the motion, which was carried. Cr. Stephens proposed that the clerk be instructed to have School street footpaths •hingled, also the footpath on the west side of Ring street north, from High street as far as required. Carried. The credit balance at the bank was reported to be £456 14s Bd. Accounts amounting to £37 8s 7d were passed for payment. Cr. Stephens moved, and Cr, Boyd seconded—“ That Cr. W. A. Burt be re-appointed on the works committee.” Or. Boyd proposed. Or. Johnston seconded—- *' That the minute passed at the last meeting referring to the proposed plan for the new chambers be rescinded, and that the alteration now proposed on the plan be passed.” Cr. Good pointed out that by rescinding that minute the whole affair would be thrown overboard. He would rather only rescind the particular portion referring to the alteration, of which he thoroughly approved. Or. Ellis proposed as an amendment “That this Council endorse the action of the committee in making the alteration in the Council chambers as proposed.” Cr. Stephens seconded tho amendment, which was carried. Or. Boyd gave intimation that at the next meeting of the Council be would bring fornard a notice of motion respecting the necessity of letting the borough reserve at Ohertsey on on improving lease by auction, as required by the Act. Matters of charitable aid were referred to the committee appointed for that purpose. Or. Ellis considered that the patronage of the Mayor and Council should not be extended to •boiling companies asking tho same, but only in such cases where the object was local and benevolent, or at least a well known and deserving case ; in this the Council generally concurred. The Council then adjourned.
