PRESENTATION TO MR CHARLES BOURNE.
This gentleman having disposed of his lease of tho Homebrook Farm, Southbridge, to Messrs Campbell Bros., of Bollfield, who intend working it in connection with the Bellfield estate, held a clearing sale of live and dead stock on Thursday and Friday. Mr James Campbell, of the firm of Aolaud, Campbell and Co., officiating as auctioneer. A very large concourse of people assembled from all parts of the province, there beiDg a very general expression of regret that Mr Bourne was leaving the district. The cattle having been all disposed of at the sale yards of the auctioneers at Southbridge, an adjournment was made to Homebrook, where a capital luncheon was provided, which was done full justice to. Mr Thomas Bruce, in proposing tho health of Mr Chas. Bourne, dilated at length on the loss the Ellesmere district would sustain in such u practical former and esteemed resident as Mr Bourne departing from its midst. He had been deputed by a few of Mr Bourne's Christchurch friends to take advantage of the present opportunity to present him with a parting memento aa a token of the respect in which he was held, both as a thorough business man and a private gentleman. He wished Mr Chas. Bourne and family every success in their new sphere of action. Mr Bruce then handed Mr Bourne a solid silver salver and cup, handsomely engraved, and with the following inscription :—" Presented to Mr Chas. Bourne by a few o F his most sincere friends, on his leaving Southbridge." Mr Bourne thanked the donors in a few very appropriate words, expressing his regret at leaving the district, and hoped he would meet as many true friends down South as he had in Christchurch and tho Ellesmere district.
